The Completely Free E-mail Update #11
Issued Sep 16, 1997
Welcome to the eleventh edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
WebWolf & FtpWolf
While two separate programs, they do integrate to extend internet searches. WebWolf is a desktop-based web crawler while will follow links based off specified search data and just keep on trawling websites following keywords through page links. You can either start WebWolf on a specific site (say, one with good links in the field in which you are searching) or you can get it to start at the major search engines, looking up the keywords and then following the links from there. Claimed to be able to crawl thousands of sites per hour at 28.8k, WebWolf can also use the search facilities of FtpWolf to extend the search. FtpWolf searches only ftp sites and is more limited in its field of operation. We used both programs to search for 'freeware +windows' and while there were only 11 matches for FtpWolf (remembering it was not good ftp search data), WebWolf just ground on and on in the background amassing thousands of sites. When stopped, both programs convert the data into a htm page on our hard disk and then open it in our browser. You can then click on the links to access the individual sites. One nice touch was the inclusion of the 'source' page for each link, allowing you to backtrack from a specific page back to which page had a link to it. When CFS was listed, the source page was from a site we had not heard about before and we were pleased to see a link to us. Both WebWolf and FtpWolf are demo programs which are fully functionable but lack certain refinements (the number of search engines consulted, etc) and you also have to put up with annoying nag screens. Even with those limitations WebWolf, and to a lesser degree FtpWolf, are absolutely essential tools for all net users. For just gathering raw data on specified search criteria you cannot beat these two utilities. Both programs include 16-bit code for Win 3.1 users. Please note, it is not entirely clear from the homepage for these products that they are free for non-commercial use but the author has assured us that they are. WebWolf is a 1.44MB download and FtpWolf is 1.5MB. Both can be accessed from:

WinSplit 95
Ever want to copy a file larger than 1.44MB on to a floppy disk? WinSplit 95 is what you need! WinSplit will break down that large file into 1.44MB (or whatever you decide) chunks so you can copy the files on to floppy disks. Right click on the 'restore' file and it will bring back your monster file. Handling up to 1,000 file-splits (does anyone know of a file as large as 1,440MB???), WinSplit will also create a DOS batch file for you if the program has to be re-constituted without WinSplit being present. Supporting drag 'n drop, WinSplit 95 is another of those essential tools which everyone will use at some time (specially when you've just downloaded a huge file and want to share it with a friend via floppy disks). The main helpfile is in German but there is an English version as an optional 14kB download. Access the main 721kB download from:

Ftp Explorer
Ftp Explorer is a really superb ftp client with many many features. Sporting an Explorer-like interface, it features 'resumed downloading' (from servers which support it) where it attempts to restart a partial download instead of having to start again. It can also handle dial-ups and disconnections, meaning that you can set it to download (in the background) and then disconnect when it's finished. It can also redial if the connection is lost before the download is completed. All in all, a really great ftp client for both uploads and downloads. Access this 661kB download from:

Win95 Registry
Presented in WinHelp format, this helpfile will soon have you tweaking your Win95 Registry with the best of them. Well laid out with good information, chapters include: Fine tuning Win95; Win95 Reference Materials; Problem Solving in Win95; Registry Binary Value Reference List; Registry Tricks; Registry Editor Command Reference; Customizing Win95; etc. Maybe not for absolute novices, Win95 Registry is never-the-less an easy to read guide to fiddling with the look and feel of Win95. FBS Client Side Image Mapper (CSIM)
There are a few good (and still free) image-map creating programs but without doubt the best we have seen to date is FBS Client Side Image Mapper (CSIM). Load your image, marque out a rectangular area on it and a dialog box appears which asks for the URL of the marked area. When each section is done, the area is grayed out so you know just what has been linked and what hasn't. So simple! Once your map is marked out you are offered a list of reference points (the marked out area) and the respective URLs. You are also offered the HTML code which can be saved either into a htm file, or into the clipboard (the easiest) which can then be pasted directly into your page. There is also a 16-bit version too. Why can't other client side image-map makers be so simple? This program is distributed as 'postcardware'. CSIM is a 507kB download which can be accessed from:

FINALLY
If you wish to link to the CFS site we have posted a copy of some different banners, logos and buttons on a special page. It also includes the HTML code to insert those images so you can just copy and paste directly from our site on the internet. New graphics will be added over the next few weeks and old ones will be upgraded. We ask everyone who links to us to tell us the URL of that link when it is posted. A direct link to the Completely Free Software page from yours will add value to your site as a place to visit. Access the new 'Banner HTML' page from any of the main CFS pages.
