Leelou v1.6.1 Win9x
Leelou is an amazing Java tool which can create demos, animated help and FAQs. It produces a very compact movie file (Viewlet), which plays in any modern browser without a plug-in. The program is designed to display screenshots to which you can add an animated cursor and balloon help. Creating the screenshots is simple. Open the program (in 800 x 600 mode), select the screen format 640 x 480, open up the screen you wish to capture and, when it is right, click on the Paste key (not the PrtScrn key as you would imagine). When you have created a series of copied screens (they are stored in the program), change the screen resolution back to 800 x 600 and access the Leelou program. The screens you captured are now displayed. You can copy screens or remove them, add GIF or JPG images (GIF are better), even move the order around. Clicking on the first screen/image, you then move into the edit mode where you can add a cursor, add either balloon help or a nail-it note, etc. Once complete, you simply click a button which will compile the images into a movie file (Viewlet). This can be displayed in any modern browser (IE4 or better, Netscape 4.06 or better). The entire program is extremely professional great graphics, lots of Viewlet helpfiles, etc and the results are outstanding. We found that the test Viewlets we created were quite large and might have to look further at how we can reduce that size. We also felt that the 640 x 480 size just a little too big maybe it could be reduced by about 10% so that it fitted better on a screen. You can click here to see a 200kB applet we created. One nice feature about the program is that it is advertiser supported with an affiliate program. Users can get 15% of the income from the advertising banners by signing up as affiliates. Imagine, you are getting paid to use a free program... Neat! We were blown away by Leelou we think you will be too! Access this 6.16MB download from: Win9x Internet Related
The Continuing Adventures of CyberBox v7.41 DOS (suitable Windows)
CyberBox is a fun puzzle where the object is to move boxes around so you can access the next level (15 in all plus a level editor). Like Sokoban on steroids, CyberBox is a challenging game with six styles of boxes, each with its own characteristics. Many boxes are mono-directional, some will follow you like a dog, others seems to have a mind of their own (they don't, they are simply following the rules of the game). Great fun! This DOS game only requires a VGA monitor and the lack of colors (16 only, as with any VGA game) means that the screen looks a little bland. Don't worry about looks though, because within a few minutes you'll be so involved in trying to solve the various puzzles (each level is different, of course) that you won't care. Still, we would love to see a Windows version of this game, if only to offer better graphics and a fuller color palette. Don't expect to solve these puzzles in a few minutes and the "Save game" option should get well used as you get called away for other things like sleeping. Apart from the clunky DOS interface, we loved CyberBox! Access this 194kB download from: DOS General Games
AnalogX SoftSubmit v1.03 Win9x
AnalogX SoftSubmit is a software submission program for authors which will automatically list a software program with over 50 software libraries and directories (like CFS). The excellent list of libraries/directories includes Filefarm, Jumbo, LockerGnome, NoNags, Shareware Junkies, etc and, of course, CFS. The sites you can list to is selectable, though from our experience most people just list to all of them (which can be annoying if you are receiving info on shareware and you are a freeware-only site). It still takes a while to go through each of the sites you wish to submit to, selecting the category for your program and other details. After you have selected your sites, submission is really simple just fill in the blanks and send of the forms. If you have more than one program to submit then this is really easy as the most intensive part of the submission is setting up the submission sites, not adding info about your program. As a recipient of these forms, we still prefer our own submission form which ensures that the person submitting actually has visited (and, we hope, read) the submission page. We also request the fields we want rather than just receive generic info, some of which is not relevant. However, this is still the best submission program we have seen. Period. If you create programs and want to submit them to the major freeware and shareware sites on the Net then SoftSubmit is a great program to start with. RemoteKeys v3.2.10 Win9x
RemoteKeys is a tool for replacing key combinations (also text modules) with simple mouse clicks. It allows you to keep your head and hands free of complicated key combinations and sends self-created commands and text modules to any application window by a simple mouse click on the RemoteKeys panel. It offers 10 user profiles with 250 free assignable buttons. This program is accessed from the desktray with the last used window opened with either a left or right mouse click and the right mouse click also bringing up the menu. With RemoteKeys you can quickly access virtually any keyboard character supported by the font you are using, including the special characters not easily accessible. You can also use it to supply text for pasting into documents it even helps you fill in a form on the Net. This program has so many features it has become cumbersome and users will find that there is a fairly steep learning curve before you can get much beyond the basics. However, once mastered you will wonder how you ever lived without it. If we were to sum it up with two adjectives they would be "powerful" and "complicated". Give RemoteKeys a chance and you will be well rewarded. If you aren't prepared to devote the effort then it is probably not for you. Access this 295kB download from: Win9x Desktop Utilities
Brainiac Behavior Engine v1.00 Win9x
Brainiac Behavior Engine (BBE) is a sophisticated AI tool for creating role playing games (RPGs). It has a simple but intuitive interface which allows users to design and tweak complex simulations of real-life behavior. The author claims that the program offers: intelligent and reasoned responses to player actions by any computer controlled characters; character actions are dependant on state of mind and practical considerations; characters themselves are not static or merely reactive (they will pursue their own interests and independently assign themselves goals with or without player actions); and a groundbreaking model of verbal interaction. While we didn't actually create any games, we did note that the program appears relatively easy to use while still offering an excellent depth of control of the characters. There is also quite good information to assist the first time user extract the maximum benefit from BBE. The AI (artificial intelligence) aspect is quite good though, like other AI programs, it still falls far short of real AI. The program cannot "think" like we do though the characters will appear to have a life of their own to users. Most impressive! Access this 1.36MB download from: Win9x General Programs
Christmas Fortune's Favor v1.00 Win9x
This is an excellent if fairly easy to win solitaire cardgame with a Christmas theme. Forgetting the Christmas theme, the cardgame is very addictive, even if you should win most games you play. The game comes with a 'screensaver' (hit the Esc button to remove it from the screen) which uses the same Christmas greeting card image. Forget about the Christmas theme, you will thoroughly enjoy this solitaire game all through the year specially if you don't normally have much success in winning at solitaire games. The card faces are excellent and there are good sound effects. Apart from the Christmas theme, the main area of criticism was that, having played a game, you had to escape out of the program and then reload it to play another game. Strange. Once a game is played the 'screensaver' image is left on the screen. The game is simple to play and most players should be able to work it out without help from the documentation. PowerZip 2000 Lite (build 2173) Win9x
PowerZip 2000 Lite is a great archive manager which can unzip ZIP, CAB, RAR and ACE archives and which can also create ZIP and EXE archives. Advertiser supported, it does not have quite the same number of features as the shareware version though it is still a great archive manager in its own right. It has its own "Update" button so you can get the latest version on-line and it allows you to execute a program while it is still zipped. The viewer uses the default Windows ASCII editor (normally NotePad) to view Readme files, etc prior to them being unzipped. We were disappointed in the number of ads displayed in the program's window (one banner and six buttons) which we feel is somewhat excessive for a cutdown version of a program. We were also sorry that the program is too big to fit on a single floppy disk. However, the interface is excellent and the program quite easy to use. Certainly worth a look. SyMon v2.0 DOS (suitable for Windows)
SyMon is an extremely powerful boot manager that will allow you to maintain several operating systems on the one hard drive. The main features are: up to 36 simultaneous independent partitions; up to 20 operating systems using any 4 of 36 partitions; built-in fdisk for easy creating, editing, deleting of the partitions; built-in setup dialog for operating systems; multiple hard drive support; can boot from second hard drive; full support of drives larger than 8GB; partition search facility which can restore partition structure of disk; etc. Wow! Not really for novices, SyMon offers a powerful bootup suite with a tiny footprint. The main file is so small that it lives in the boot section of your hard drive! Simple to setup, extremely powerful in its operation, SyMon is a fabulous utility if you run more than one operating system. It supports all the popular OSs, including Linux, Fat32 Windows, etc. The only complaint is the lack of Helpfile. As we said, not for novices... However, we were most impressed with this utility!. WebCopier v2.00a Win9x
WebCopier is a multifunctional offline browser that copies entire Web sites (up to thousands of levels!) and stores them locally until you are ready to view them. The program features: precise links searching, including JavaScript parsing (it can download up to 100 files simultaneously and print an entire Website or only specific part of it); provides support for JavaScript (JS), Java Classes (CLASS) and Macromedia Flash (SFW) files; supports proxy servers (specify user name and password to access secure Web sites); uses file and URL filters to give users full control on which files could be loaded and which should be skipped; etc. There are also language module plug-ins for non-English speaking users (currently nine languages supported but many more under development). The program is simple to use and has a clean interface. Add the URL, make sure that the options are set correctly (number of levels, etc) and select New Project. A wizard will walk you through the process and the site is soon sitting on your hard drive. Simple. However, we would be remiss if we didn't warn you that Websites, like books, newspapers, etc, are copyright and copying someone else's Website could be a breach of the law! Advertiser supported, WebCopier is one of the better site downloaders we have seen. Access this 1.60MB downloads from: Win9x Internet Related
