The Completely Free E-mail Update #13
Issued Sep 30, 1997
Welcome to the thirteenth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
Corel InfoCentral 7
This PIM (personal information manager) was released with Corel Office Professional 7 and is now available as a free download from Corel. This is what Corel's website says about it: "...for a limited time, you can download Corel InfoCentral 7 for free and begin managing all of your important information with a single application. This is NOT a demo or stripped-down 'teaser' version of InfoCentral, but the same Corel InfoCentral 7 that is included in the Corel Office Professional 7." InfoCentral 7 is a powerful suite of programs/utilities but with a clumsy interface. We already have InfoCentral 8 on our test machine (a good program using a special version of Netscape's Communicator) so we couldn't do a normal review on this earlier version, but comments from subscriber Steven Byrne of 'Ganggang' (specializes in Australian shareware and freeware listed on our various Resources page) says: "It's a 4MB download, but it is worth it. InfoCentral is a bit of a weird PIM, but it has everything but the kitchen sink in it, and so it is worth a download if you are into PIMs (and have a fast PC)." Other comments we have heard about InfoCentral 7 fully support Steven's remarks. Access this 4.1MB download (there is an optional 1.2MB manual as well) from:

Eureka
Ever need to access the contents of your desktop when you have multiple windows open? Of course you have. Microsoft even included Deskmenu in the Power Toys (which we have now ditched in favor of Snadboy's TopDesk). Eureka does much the same except that it does it through Explorer which means that you can also access a desktop item's properties. Don't have Explorer already open? Don't worry, just right-click the Start button and then click on 'Desktop' in the dialog box which appears. Simple. Eureka is also unusual in the way you load it as it really just alters your Registry. When you download this 2kB file (blink and you'll miss the download altogether) and unzip it you end up with three files Eureka.reg, Readme.txt and Uninst.inf. To load the new info into your registry all you have to do is double-click on the Eureka.reg file. To remove it, right-click on the Uninst.inf file and click on 'Install'. As easy as... Contact Tracker Pro
From Claris, Contact Tracker Pro is a personal information manager (PIM) featuring an address book (Doh!!!) which allows you to present information in various ways on the screen, write letters to people in your address book (it will even add your name and return address) and send them a fax. Contact Tracker Proalso supports printing of contact lists and the printing of labels. While there is provision to include an e-mail address on the data form, you cannot use it to send an e-mail to someone which is a shame. Also available for Win 3.1 (see below), access this 1.13MB download from:

Start Or Switch
Add right-click access to all open programs and the Start menu from within any program, folder, etc. Start Or Switch allows you to switch to any open programs through the new context sensitive menu which appears to the left of the cursor (the original menu still apears on the right). If you put a shortcut of the exe file (Sosmenu.exe) into the Startup folder (usually C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp) so that it boots up when Windows is loaded you can have instant access to all your open programs this way. K/oS EzClpCopy
EzClpCopy is a simple utility to copy the contents of a text file to the Clipboard and then retrieve it with the use of a hot key. This is handy if you have, say, a signature for your e-mail and your e-mail client can't handle signatures. Have the signature set up as, say, Ctrl-F12 and whenever you want that signature to appear on your e-mail all you have to do is press the hot key and EzClpCopy will open, copy the contents of that text file to your e-mail using the standard Ctrl-V paste method, and then it will terminate. Simple to install or uninstall, EzClpCopy requires VB40032.DLL (not included). You can access this handy 7kB download from:

Web Downloader
Ever want to download a website for viewing off-line? Guess we all have so we all have use for a program like Web Downloader. Don't let the fact that this program was originlly designed for intranets stop you from getting it, this simple but effective program works just fine over the internet and supports such conventions as drag 'n drop (from your browser) and also accepts URLs from the Windows' Clipboard. Able to download 2 to 100 files simultaneously, Web Downloader is a great little program to have tucked away on your hard drive. Access this 199kB download from:

ToolBox
There are many button bar program launchers for W95 but few are as simple yet as effect as ToolBox. Fully supporting drag 'n drop, you can drag an exe file to the bar and it will create a shortcut for you to that program. You can also configure it to launch Explorer so that it starts at a specified folder or drive (very handy if you have multiple drives). It also includes an excellent set of drive/folder icons, gets information about your drives, lets you drag 'n drop a file on to a program, etc. You can also have data files setup as icons so that when you click on a button the associated program will load and then that file. Missing some of the (usually unused) bells and whistles of other button launchers, ToolBox's attraction is its simplicity. Set it up so that it always stays on top, or so that it is hidden by the active program's screen (access it from the desktray), ToolBox is one very handy program. Access this 198kB download from:

K/oS WebImageLister
Like ListPics, WebImageLister lists the GIF and JPEG files in a specified directory as a HTML file which can then be viewed through a browser. This well-behaved program installs through an .inf file (right click on the file and then click on 'install') after which you can delete the directory and contents which housed the unzipped download files. Uninstall through the Add/Remove Pograms section of the Control Panel. To use this program, aim it at the directory of images you want listed and press the Start button. Our stopwatch wasn't fast enough to record the time taken to list 216 image files in one of our directories (though we did have a problem when it came to viewing them we ran out of Windows resources!). After creating the viewing file you are asked if you want the browser loaded so you can view your handiwork. Access this 155kB download from:

VueIcons
VueIcons is a terrific utility which shows an icon of an image file in Explorer. Now you can often get an idea of what an image file looks like just from its icon. What more can we say about this gem? If, like us, you have image files everywhere on your hard drive and aren't always sure what X119852V.gif actually is, then if you install VueIcons you will see an thumb-nail view of that image in Explorer and in all file dialog boxes. To speed up the loading process of Explorer, VueIcons caches the last 1,000 images. We consider it an 'essential' add-on to W95's Explorer. Access this 190kB download from:

FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
Contact Tracker Pro
For details on this PIM see the Win95 section (above). The Win 3.1 version requires Win32s to be installed first on your computer. The Win 3.1 version (not downloaded by CFS) is a hefty 3.54MB which might also include the Win32s program (would explain its huge size). Access the Win 3.1 version from:

DrMenu
DrMenu is a DOS-based menu system which uses batch files to execute programs (you must be launching all programs from batch files for it to work). With a fabulous install program and a heap of extras like an ASCII text editor, calculator and screensaver, DrMenu is one of the better DOS-based menu systems we've seen, and you can't beat the price!. WordJunction v1.0
This is a PC Magazine utility to create either a crossword or a word find puzzle. Using a normal text editor to create a list of names and clues, you then go through the four simple steps to turn your list into a puzzle using WordJunction. So simple anyone can do it! There is even a sample list for your to cut your teeth on. Access this 196kB download from:

FINALLY
You might have noticed, the Win 3.1/DOS page has now been broken up into five separate pages, the same as the Win95 page(s). This will speed the loading of the Win 3.1 & DOS page (it ended up at nearly 60k!) and you will be able to more easily find what you're looking for. It doesn't seem all that long ago that the Completely Free Software site was just part of a general 'My Interests' page and was a listing of 10 or 20 favorite freeware programs with a daily hit rate of about 15! Yesterday (Sunday Sep 28, 1997 US time) our counter recorded 734 hits. A slight improvement over the original 'half a page' of free software!
Please keep sending in information on completely free Win/DOS software, and include any of your own comments and observations about particular programs (see Corel InfoCentral in the W95 section above).
