The Completely Free E-mail Update #14

Issued Oct 7, 1997

Welcome to the fourteenth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing – us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS

Photonyx Viewer

Photonyx Viewer is an image viewer with a few very decided pluses. It handles a wide array of image filetypes (including our internet favorites, GIF and JPG) and allows for quite large extremes of zooming in and out to look at the image –from 16:1 to 1:16, with either a slider zoom control or a preselected zoom ratio. You select a filetype in the normal way through a dialog box, but once you've viewed an image you've also logged into the directory where that image resides and can then scroll through all the other images in that directory. Photonyx Viewer is worth getting just to look at the terrific web authoring on its homepage – though we wish the same care had been extended to the readme files (almost non-existent) and the spelling in both the program and on the text file supplied. A shame really, 'cos it spoils the presentation of this excellent viewer. Photonyx Viewer is one of the fastest viewers we've seen and is a credit to its publisher. If you want an image viewer then you'll find it hard to better Photonyx Viewer. Access this 1.17MB download from: W95 General Programs

CoolBar Animator

Are you sick and tired of that Win95 boot-up screen? Want to use your own BMP file but don't like the idea of it not being animated like the Microsoft one? Then this is Good News week for you because we have listed the simplest, easiest program to create a cool animated bar on the bottom of your boot-up flash screen. You even get directions on how to create an image (what size, etc) and all you have to do is aim CoolBar Animator at it and, Bingo!, you have created a replacement for the boring Win95 flash screen. What joy! Now you can say all those things you wanted to say about Mrs Gate's lil' boy, Billy, and his whizz-bang invention (in perpetual beta!) – and without worrying about getting a lawsuit in the bargain! Convert

A simple name with a simple function – but without doubt the best we've seen in this field. Convert is a 'weights and measures' converter, allowing the user to convert a phenomenal array of distance, temperature, volume, time, speed, mass, power, density, area, force, density and pressure figures. For example, under 'distance' you have a choice of converting between: centimeter; decimeter; feet; furlongs; inches; kilometers; lightyears; meters; miles; millimeters; nautical miles; parsecs; and yards. And that is only one of the 11 categories! You can convert between any two of the items in each section. For example, if you wanted to know how many miles there are in a lightyear (doesn't everyone???), you would highlight 'lightyears' as the 'input type', 'miles' as the 'output type', and '1' in the input section below, to get a readout of 5878499814000. And just so we didn't make a mistake copying the result, Convert supports the Windows' Clipboard so you can copy and paste your answers. Could you want any more? SwTskBar

SwTskBar is a handy little utility which places an icon of a specified program in the Win95 taskbar for easy access. SwTskBar is used like this:
    SwTskBar.exe c:\msoffice\winword\winword.exe
You can also specify which icon is used (many of the larger programs offer more than on icon). The easiest way to use SwTskBar is to create a series of shortcuts, each with the appropriate exe file information appended to it, and then run these from the Startup menu. MoniDir

Even wanted to monitor activity on a directory? How about seeing what files are added to, say, the C:\Windows\System directory when you load a new program? How about if you are using a network and you want to know when a file is ammended or added? MoniDir is a directory monitoring utility which will watch up to five directories at a time. Quite a handy utility, even if only for seeing what gets dumped into your Windows\System directory when you load a new program. Access this 390kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS

WinaGram

WinaGram is an anagram-type word game where the idea is to create words out of a list of letters – much like Scrabble but without the board and the scoring. Complete with its own dictionary file, WinaGram is a addictive little game for people who like words. designed to run under Win 3.1, WinaGram also runs OK under Win95 as well. Microsoft Chess

Chess buffs everywhere will like this Win 3.1 game of chess from Microsoft. Lacking fancy graphics, never-the-less MS Chess is still a great game and features such things as "Show Valid Moves" and "Show Threatened Pieces". It can also suggest a move for you! Overall, an excellent game. Access this 182kB download from: W31 General Games

COMMENTS

We had planned on bringing you a review of the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 but in the week since it has been available we have been unable to download a copy. In fact, the Australian Internet has been at gridlock all week because of the release of this program, even to the point that we have been unable to upload ammended files to OzEmail, our main Australian site and, co-incidentally, one of only two ISPs in Australia which is hosting IE4. We hope our overseas subscribers have more success in their endeavors to download a copy. We are particularly interested in seeing how the new IE4 alters the desktop and how that will affect Netscape's Communicator. Any reader comments will be appreciated.
