The Completely Free E-mail Update #15

Issued Oct 14, 1997

Welcome to the fifteenth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing – us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0

The new IE4 is a far superior product to the previous version though we were a little disappointed in some aspects of the program. For example, when trying to access one hard-to-get site IE4 stopped trying to get the site after 57% was downloaded and it didn't matter how many times we hit the "Refresh" button it would not load more than what had already been downloaded (ie 57%). However, we tried Netscape's Communicator on the same site at the same time and even though it too slowed down when it approached the 60% mark, it kept on trying and finally retrieved the whole page. Still, IE4 has lots of other goodies, and the new ones include 'channels' and the ability to monitor specific pages and notify you if they change. There is no argument, IE4 is the best free web browser/e-mail client available on the Net. At approximately 15MB, IE4 is not a small download though its potential is phenomenal (by that time it will cost – big time). Access this latest "must have" from: W95 Internet Related

Dr Mysto the Mindreader

Amusing example of 'teachable artificial intelligence' where you are asked for a word and then the program (through a 'talking head') asks questions to which you can only answer 'yes' or 'no' until it guesses the word. If it can't, it asks you what further questions it should have asked to differentiate between what it answered and your original word so that it learns. An interesting 'game' which could get rather addictive as you try harder and harder words and it just keeps on learning. There are a number of 'brains' you can use and the author has even included the source code with the program to encourage experimentation. Also available in Win 3.1 format, this 712kB download also needs the VB5 runtime files (total download with them is 1.22MB). FTBAB

Try saying that name with a mouthful of marbles! Actually, it's an acronym for "Favorites To Bookmarks And back" which kinda explains exactly what it does. If you run the two main browsers, IE and Netscape, you know the trouble there is in keeping your favorites/bookmarks the same for both browsers. FTBAB is a simple utility to convert from one to the other (and back) so both lists are the same. Essential! Once you tell it where the Bookmark file is (with our version of Communicator it was in a directory called d:\MyFiles\Users\defaultuser) all you had to do was click on OK and the conversion was instantaneous and then FTBAB closed itself down. very neat. While the program correctly identified the location of the Favorites folder (there was a Browse button in case it was elsewhere), you have to use the Browse button for the location of the Bookmark file everytime you use it! By running this program from a Shortcut, you can specify the location of both the favorites folder and the Bookmark file as a command line operative by entering the correct information in the Properties dialog box. In our case it was...

D:\FTBAB\FTBAB.EXE /fav c:\Windows\favorites /book d:\myfiles\users\defaultuser\bookmark.htm

Soooo easy! We are keeping FTBAB very handy for use after every session. Access this minuscule 25kB download from: W95 Internet Related

Theme Installer

If you already have Microsoft's Plus! pack you will have noticed that it doesn't handle the installation and deletion of themes very well. Most seem to have be installed manually. Theme Installer overcomes these shortcomings by moving everything to its correct directory and then registering the theme so it can be removed by the Add/Remove Programs utility in Control Panel. Theme Installer also manages log-on and log-off screens – moving new ones and renaming them, and saving the existing ones with an .old extension. With the proliferation of themes available, being able to install and remove themes easily is a big advantage. Access this tiny 25kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Directory Printer

WinMag's DirPrn is a terrific little utility (well, maybe not THAT little) which will print out a directory and, optionally, sub-directories too. This means that you can use it to print out all the files on a hard disk. Information printed is basic – directory name, filename, date and time (no size!) – but at one line per file you can chew up many, many sheets of paper to list everything. The 294kB download has both Win95 and Win 3.1 versions included and can be accessed from: W95 Desktop Utilities

FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS

Hell Fighter

This is a tremendous space combat simulation which will get you coming back for more, and more, and more... Eleven levels of play from "Training Drone" to "Terror!" will give you every opportunity to exercise your level of skill. Also playable over a network (including the Internet), Hell Fighter requires a high-end PC to really get the best from it and don't let the fact that it's a Win 3.1 game make you to think that is in some way deficient. Graphics are very professional with smooth scrolling and great (though very loud) sounds. The one we looked at was version 1.9 and version 2.0 is reported to be a Win95 program, though this one plays very well on our Win95 test machine. While the download is not small at 3.4MB, Hell Fighter is worth every second of your download time and if we hadn't completely fallen in love with Kung Foo Kim it would have taken the top spot on the Win 3.1 games page. Let's just say that it's sharing top spot... Access this fabulous game from: W31 General Games

Dialog Killer

Many programs – specially Win 3.1 games – have annoying start-up dialog boxes which means you must press the Enter key, etc before you can start the program. Dialog Killer enters that command for you so you don't have to go through the same old boring stuff every time you want to use the program. The commands (OK, Cancel, Abort, Retry, Ignore, Yes, No) and the associated information can either be manually selected, or automatically selected by Dialog Killer (the latter is preferred). While we couldn't find a Win95 program which had a suitable dialog box, when we looked at some Win 3.1 programs (all freeware games with nag screens) it worked fine and we have added Dialog Killer to our Startup menu so it will always be available. Easy to use, simple in concept, and unobtrusive in operation – what more could you want from a utility! An essential tool for your desktop. Access this 119kB download from: W31 Desktop Utilities

Dr Mystro the Mindreader

A 'guess the word' game but instead of you guessing a word, the computer guesses your word (and can learn from its mistakes). See the Win95 section for more details. The Win 3.1 version includes the necessary VB runtime files. Access this 909kB download from: W31 General Games

Hangman PC

Seems like the old hangman word (and phrase) guessing game will never die. This Win 3.1 version is very well done with four skill levels, optional sound, five topics to choose from (ie animals, food/drink, colors, astronomy and countries) or the computer will choose one at random, word list which is editable, etc. There is even a (childish) pic of your fellow slowly getting hung as you miss letters. Nostalgia for the oldies, new fun for the youngies, and something to wile away a wet afternoon for the rest. You can access this 61kB download from: W31 General Games

Directory Printer

WinMag's DirPrn is a terrific utility and details are in the Win95 section above. The 294kB download has both Win95 and Win 3.1 versions included and can be accessed from: W31 Desktop Utilities

Spin

Spin is another space arcade game where you shoot up the badies before they shoot up you. This is a DOS game and runs either through Windows (even W95) in a DOS box, or in native DOS. While Hell Fighter (above) uses modern 3D graphics, Spin's graphics are, to put it kindly, not in the same class. Still it is still a fun game to play and the lower quality graphics means that it is faster to download and requires less out of the PC. Sound is reported to be excellent but in our quick review we heard nothing... Still, we're sure that if we had added the correct switches to the executionable our SB16 card would have produced the fabulous sound promised. Best thing to do is try it for yourself (one man's meat is another man's 'poitrine de veau'). Access this 1.27MB download from: W31 General Games

FINALLY

Metric Convert has now been updated to version 1.2. This terrific little weights and measure converter can handle 24 separate conversions (US/metric – both ways, a total of 48 conversions) and is a small 11.6kB download. Access it from: W31 Desktop Utilities
