The Completely Free E-mail Update #16
Issued Oct 21, 1997
Welcome to the sixteenth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
PropertiesPlus
PropertiesPlus is an excellent Win95 shell extension which allows you to do things which Win95 often doesn't allow you to do like change a file extension, or a date stamp. PropertiesPlus will work with folders as well as either single or multiple files and is an excellent addition to any Win95 toolbox. Load it by right-clicking on the install.inf file and it's done. Simple. Use PropertiesPlus like you would the Properties menu item by right-clicking on a file or folder. PropertiesPlus is added underneath the Win95 one. Hangman DeLuxe
There are good and bad versions of computerized hangman available on the Net but this is definitely one of the better ones. Excellent graphics are complimented with a choice of word lists in 13 languages Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Latin, Norwegian, Polish, Spanish, Swahili and Swedish. Guess the Latin version is for the masochists... In this version you play-off a total of 50 times for a game, with top scores recorded. Sometimes it seems that all the words are easy, and then along will come one which would baffle all but a Scrabble expert, like 'xerophilous' ("adapted to life in the presence of minimal amounts of water" according to Mirriam-Webster's Third New International Dictionary but you knew that already, didn't you?). If you never get another version, get this one. Access this 483kB download from: W95 General Games
ProntoMail Professional Edition
ProntoMail is a contender for the e-mail stakes (currently held by Eudora Light but with the free e-mail clients supplied with MS IE and Netscape closing in). It has one big advantage over Eudora Light, it offers a spell checker and not just for US English either (though that is the default). You can optionally download spell checkers for British English, French, Finnish, Swedish, German and Italian, plus it is planned to support German, Spanish and Dutch in the future. the British English dictionary added another 213kB download to the already hefty 4.2MB of the main program. ProntoMail will automatically look for Eudora and copy across all the Eudora mailboxes and address books and, like Eudora, recognizes Internet addresses and turns them into hyperlinks. In fact, with Address Book support and mail filtering, ProntoMail does just about everything Eudora Light does plus add the spell checker. Very tempting! ProntoMail is advertiser supported (that's why it's free) and can be accessed from: W95 Internet Related
PocoMan
PocoMan is a 21st century superperson (well, we must be politically correct, mustn't we?) who has to solve 50 puzzles set before him. Based off the Japanese strategy game of Sokoban, PocoMan must move objects around the screen to achieve certain goals and, while it looks simple initially, when you start you will see the fiendishly subtle layouts which will try and thwart your every move. After you've played PocoMan for a while you can see why Sleepless Software released this program for free the company sells 'cheat' books to help you solve the 50 mazes! But you don't need the 'cheat' books to win, do you (heh, heh, heh). Internet-aware, PocoMan can be set to be automatically updated when new versions are released. Be prepared for some sleepless nights after you access this terrific 1.64MB download from: W95 General Games
E-merge
E-merge is an e-mail-merge client for use with Eudora. If you wish to send out a number of 'personalized' e-mail messages (in the same way that a word processor can do a mail merge), E-merge can integrate the whole process for you. Just write your message using %n% in place of personalized details (for example: Dear %1%,) in an ASCII text editor (like NotePad) and then make up a list for the data you wish to add and finish each section of data on a new line with a comma to show the break between fields of data (called 'comma delimited') but make the e-mail address the last field in the record. Enter the location of both the data file and the message file into E-merge (making sure that it knows where Eudora is located, normally C:\Eudora) and Bingo! you have sent off your personalized message to the people in your database. E-merge can also work with Microsoft Access data files. For people new to mail merge, there is an extensive Help file with this program (accessed through the F1 key there is no menu selection with this program). If you have a legitimate use for sending out personalized e-mail messages (the license forbids spamming), then E-merge could be just the tool you need. Zip Query
This excellent, if large, program allows you to look up a US zip code or city name using specified search criteria. Should you wish to find out the zip code of a particular city you would enter that city's name (or the first three or more characters) and you would get a listing of all cities matching that search criteria and their zip codes. Enter 'spr' and you get a very long list of cities from Spraggs PA to Spry UT. Add a fourth character, say an 'i' so you now have 'spri' you will get a smaller list from Sprigg WV to Sprinkle TX. The more information you give the program the more accurate the data you get back. You can also enter zip codes with the same 3 digit minimum and get all the cities with a zip code starting with those numbers. Access this 2.19MB download from: W95 General Programs
Rename The Recycle Bin & Toilet
These are actually two separate programs from Easy Desk Software. 'Rename The Recycle Bin' is a program to automatically alter the registry settings so you can use alternate icons and names for both the Recycle Bin and for Your Computer. This is a very easy program to use (so easy, it doesn't even have a Help file!) and is a 306kB download. It also has provision for changing back the icons and names to the default settings. The other program is called 'Toilet' and is two sets of Recycle Bin icons (for both empty and full) plus WAV files to add that extra gurgle to your files being 'confined to a watery grave'. The 90kB download also includes full manual registry amendments (should you like to delve into the registry and alter it yourself) or can be used with Rename The Recycle Bin which is why they're together here :) Access both from: W95 Windows Extras
FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
Free Virtual Galaxy Project
Even if astronomy isn't your baby, the Free Virtual Galaxy Project is a mind blowing exercise in star gazing using the 3D "Free Virtual Galaxy" (FVG) program and a selection of star databases. The basic program (fvg.exe) is a 385kB download, and then you can grab up to three star databases the largest being Bighip (46,000 stars), a 2.96MB download that requires a powerful PC with about 10 MB of disk space available. Other star databases are much smaller, though you can use switches on load up to limit the number of stars displayed. These other databases are Hipparcos Annex (~1 MB) and Yale Catalog (~694kB). Once you've loaded FVG and the database of your choice, you are able to navigate through the heavens through the use of mouse and keyboard commands (very simple). There are a number of games you can play as you navigate around and you can either leave the nearby star names register on or off depending on what you want to do. This is one of those type of 'games' which you will either love or hate but is definitely worth the download to see if it suits you. This is a DOS program that works well under a DOS-box in Win95 but needs Win 3.1 users to exit Windows first. Access the Free Virtual Galaxy Project from: W31 General Games
HTeMail
This is a three in one program a WYSIWYG HTML editor, a web browser, and an e-mail client which uses HTML. For someone with basic word processing skills, HTeMail could well be the easiest way to work the Net, but HTML e-mailing is not our favorite form of receiving mail. Too much of it just simply cannot be easily read by 'normal' e-mail programs. HTeMail has some good features but is generally a basic program without many of the bells and whistles found on other specialized programs. It also adds a line at the bottom of each page saying that the page was created with HTeMail and linking to their website. If you pay a fee ($US35) you can (legally) remove that line. There is no other indication in the documentation of benefits to paying the fee and the program is stated to be free. Confusing to say the least. Pong
Yep, Pong is still around and still being played! This is a 'modern' DOS version (works great under Win95) with full 'freaked out' stereo sound and a built-in screen saver. Playable by either one or two people this is really a very good version of the classic time-waster. Simple, yet addictive the two prerequisites of a successful game. What more can we say anyone want a game? Access this 45kB download from: W31 General Games
Classic DOS Games
We have added two classic DOS games, Invaders and Leaper, to our Win 3.1 & DOS games page. Both are 26kB downloads and both are PC speaker, 16-color classics in their own right. These are not modern versions of the classics but classics within themselves (though neither are actually the original games bought out under these names). Invaders is, well, space invaders and Leaper is a the frog game where you have to get the frog across the road without squashing him and then over a river (there are logs and lily pads). These are exciting games and we suggest you put your Pacemaker on to full power before attempting them (do not play these games if you are susceptible to heart attacks!). Seriously, try these fun games from our past and you'll know what we did before Quake, etc came along (and someone with a VGA screen was to be emulated). Go get these classic games from: W31 General Games
Tetris Lite
To round out our nostalgia trip, we've added Tetris Lite which is, surprisingly, a rather good version of this much copied game. Tetris Lite is a Win 3.1 game with simple but good graphics and a floorplan similar to the original. Tetris Lite really is a worthwhile download for anyone who enjoys the 2D version rather than the later 3D ones (like 3D Cubes). Access this 108kB download from: W31 General Games
COMMENTS
Each week we download dozens of program which don't make it to our list. We do not try to be the TUCOWS of the freeware world and pride ourselves on the selection of free software we make available. If you find a program on our list which won't load or which doesn't measure up, please let us know and we will re-review that program. We try, where possible, to link to the author's homepage so you get the latest version often a different one to the one we downloaded and tested. Usually a later version means improvements, but occasionally the author releases a 'dud' version and we would like to know where this is the case.
