The Completely Free E-mail Update #26

Issued Jan 6, 1998

Welcome to the twenty-sixth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below. Check out all the recent additions (from the past 30 days) at: CFS New Additions

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

WinNc v1.3 – W95
WinNc (Windows Native Commander) is a Norton Commander-like file manager using split screens and with a host of extras to make this program a 'must' download. WinNc comes with a raft of tools – like its own zipping/unzipping utility, file splitting utility, etc – and also gives quick access to either native Win95 system tools (defrag, ScanDisk, etc) or you can insert your own into the toolbar. It is also fully network-compatible. Files or directories can be selected (tagged) by right-clicking on them, and then copied or moved across to the window pane (the other screen – another directory, another hard disk, even across networks). The bottom of the screen has a DOS-like command line which displays the current active directory (from either window) which supports, like the rest of the program, drag 'n drop (drag a filename onto the command line and you can then easily add switches, etc). Also at the bottom of the screen is another bank of buttons (like 'Compress' for zipping up a file) and underneath that again is hard disk information – overall size of the displayed drive, and free space. With an excellent Help file, we know you will be as impressed with WinNc as we were and even if you don't use it as your default file manager shell, it will be kept handy for that time when you need a better file or directory manager than Explorer. All freeware should be so good! Access this 801kB from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Associate – W95
Associate is a program for experienced users who wish to have a better (or is that easier?) way to modify file extension associations within W95. For example, if you click on a .DOC file in Explorer, Windows will open your default word processing program (WordPad is the original default but if you install MS Office, it will be changed to MS Word). Should you not have MS Word installed (good choice!) and you want to have a the .DOC extension associated with a better (but free) simple word processor, you may have installed Cetus CWordPad (as we have) but need to associate the .DOC extension with CWordpad rather than WordPad. By inserting C:\Cetus\CWordPad.exe "%1" instead of the WordPad details, CWordPad becomes your 'associated' program (with that file extension). All that to say that Associate is really a much better and easier way of changing or adding file extension associations and it even gives you the option of changing the Registry entry too. Very neat! If you are an experienced user – or you just like to muck around with the Win Registry (be warned!) – then Associate is just the ticket for you. Access this 193kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Asy500 – W95
Asy500 is a game derived from the old cardgame of '500'. Designed for play on the Internet or by LAN, Asy500 includes sufficient 'artificial intelligence' for single person play (primarily as practice) though we did find the interface awkward initially. After you've got into the swing of the game, you will enjoy even single-person play (with a computer-partner and against two computer-oponents) and the only drawback we found with single-person play was that the computer was loath to bid high, with seven calls being pretty much the maximum. A bit of prettying up of the interface (including the ability to go 'full screen') would have been nice touches, and we did find the animation somewhat jerky. '500' fans who wish to practice at home will really enjoy this program once they get comfortable with the interface. They could well want to get an Internet game going with some friends. PowerZip – W95
Dima's PowerZip is a WinZip-type program except that, unlike WinZip, PowerZip is completely free. Like SuperZip which we have been using for quite some time, PowerZip gives an easy front end to the zip archive process. Unlike SuperZip (an advertizer supported program), PowerZip has one advantage which has seen us switching over to use only this as our default zipper/unzipper program. That is, it offers to unzip an archive into a subdirectory using the zipped file's filename for that directory name (eg, a file called abc.zip would go into a directory called 'abc') under one called 'c:\downloads' (also created by PowerZip but can be changed if required). No more creating temporary directories to unzip files into prior to running the 'setup' file! Fabulous. Also unlike SuperZip, PowerZip also gives you the option of archiving files in the ARJ format as long as you have a copy of that program on your hard disk (you can access a copy from the W31 General Programs page). PowerZip handles long filenames with ease and zips and unzips spaces, etc exactly as per the original. It's only problem is that truncates directory names and zip filenames to the old 8.s format. However the files within the zipped archive are still OK. PowerZip supports drag 'n drop, self-extracting and multi-disk archives (for splitting your files on to floppies). It also supports compressed-file viewing. If you are getting the impression that we are more than just a little bit taken with PowerZip you would not be wrong. One final question: why pay good money for an archiving program when PowerZip is available, and free? On yer bike, sunshine, and go grab PowerZip now! Anywhere Antivirus – W95
This is a virus scanner only which will quickly find infected files and warn you, but will not delete the viruses (what else did you expect for nothing???). It uses a virtual device driver so it doesn't operate as a DOS TSR (terminate and stay resident) and is reported to be faster than Norton's AntiVirus (unconfirmed). If you are worried about viruses (and who wouldn't be when downloading from the Net – not that our antivirus program has detected even one virus, yet) then this is a freeware solution which will at least warn you if you have a problem. BugFest – W31 (suitable for W95)
This is a fun arcade-type game where you are a spider and you must protect yourself from hoards of other attacking insects. Better with a joystick but can be successfully played with a keyboard, this game features full stereo sound effects and zooming sprite fx. Graphics are good, game is not just playable but (almost!!!) even addictive (well, what other comment do you expect from wrinklies?), what more can we say? Worth the 751kB download just to give it a try! You can access it from: W31 General Games

WinTidy95 – W95
Have you ever been frustrated by Microsoft's almost fanatical desire to have everything in alphabetical order? Apart from renaming files and directories with 01, 02, 03, etc in front of the existing names to force W95 to re-order them, WinTidy95 can do it for you without the need to rename. Finally! This is a terrific little utility which will become an essential add-on for most W95 desktops (though not suitable for NT or Win 3.1) and you will fall in love with it as we have. Complete desktops can be saved under specific names (Bill's Desktop, Mary's Desktop, etc) or just use the one newly arranged desktop to suit everyone. Icons can be run in almost any direction on the desktop too, not just one under the other from the left hand side top corner. Easy to use, effective and handy. What more could any W95 user want? HTML Font Colorizer – W95
HTML Font Colorizer is a neat little single-purpose program which fades between two colors for HTML headings, etc. Type in your text, specify the font, size, etc if you want something other than the HTML 'standard' text, specify the two colors you want to fade from and to, and click on "Colorize text" button. The code for the text fade is included in a panel and underneath you get an idea of what the final result will look like. When you're happy with your heading, click on "Copy to Clipboard" and the code is then available for pasting directly into your HTML page. This has got to be the easiest way of adding some life to your homepage without resorting to creating fancy graphics (which not everyone can do!). One word of caution, HTML Font Colorizer has to create a special color and code for each letter in your text so if you colorize any more than just a few words you will end up with an enormous HTML page which takes forever to load. Stick to headings (specially sub-headings) and you will kick a winning goal with this program. Access this 180kB download from: W95 Internet Related

WinSize – W95
WinSize is a terrific Win95 utility which maintains a program’s window position. You get a particular program's window exactly as you want it on the screen and then store that position in WinSize. Every time that program opens, it opens exactly where you want it opened. You can also position a window, pixel by pixel, through WinSize. If, like us, you have wayward program windows which need to be put on a leash, try WinSize. Access this 142kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Cybertron 2097 – W31 (suitable for W95)
Cybertron 2097 is a variation on the old 'space invaders' shoot-em-up game with some excellent improvements. The graphics and sound effects are superb and there are many levels of play. Based off the old 80s Robotron 2084 game, Cybertron combines addictive gameplay with good game design. We found that the keyboard controls took a little getting used to and tended to be clumsy. A joystick should make all the difference and that would be our recommendation. The only other hassle we had was in trying to get the game to install away from the recommended hard disk and/or directory. It wouldn't install until we accepted the default, which is a shame because our C:\ drive is virtually full and our games drive (F:\) had just enough room for Cybertron... Still, this is a great game which should be good for many, many hours of fun. Access this 1.29MB download from: W31 General Games

UPDATES

After all the information about Planet Archive Manager (PAM) we've included over the past two weeks, the author, Rick Mentechy, wrote to say that version 2.0 was now out and it didn't have the 'feature' of auto-inserting underscores instead spaces in long filenames which was a problem we had found with version 1.0. The later version also includes self extracting archives and encryption features. Access this much improved archiving tool from: W95 General Programs
