The Completely Free E-mail Update #27

Issued Jan 13, 1998

Welcome to the twenty-seventh edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

Collector's Database – W95
Sam Cool's Collector's Database is a fabulously easy way of categorizing collections. The supplied fields are: Name; Description; Category; Date Purchased; Where Purchased; Cost; and Selling Price. You can also add a picture of the item and the program allows you to either import a JPG or BMP image, or acquire an image through a Twain scanner or camera. Using Borland's powerful database as its engine, Collector's Database has full inventory reporting/printing functions as well as a 'find' feature. You can sort by name or category and the whole shabang is not just easy to use but very practical as well. Categorize your software, stamps, CD collection (yes, the database is even large enough to handle a teenager's CD collection!!!), your goldfish collection, even your beer can collection! You can access this 4.72MB download from: W95 General Programs

FreeView – W95
FreeView is a graphics viewer with a host of features. It supports BMP, DIB, EMF, GIF, ICO, JIF, JPG, PCX, RLE, TGA and WMF formats and can convert from any of them to BMP or JPG. Animated GIFs are supported and the program will even tile an image so you can see what that effect will be on a webpage. Should you want to view thumbnails, FreeView can create them for you and allow you to scan a directory that way. This is good stuff! But wait, there's more! FreeView can set up an image as your Windows wallpaper, and it has a slide show option too. To add some cream to the pie, FreeView downloads with 21 different sample images, ranging from cool and very usable animated GIFs to simple icons. The JokeGame – DOS (OK under Windows)
This is billed as a cross between 'The Wheel Of Fortune' and 'Hangman'. With ample (and noisy!) sound, this game is best played with two or more people (up to four) and a fun time is guaranteed for all. Start the game and a joke appears in the 'Clue' section and you are given the option of using that joke or skipping it. There is a bank of over 600 jokes so you won't tire of this quickly. Spin the 'wheel' and guess a letter in the answer to a joke and, if you guess correctly, you win the amount 'spun'. Lose and the next player takes a turn (which kinda makes it a bit of a no-no for one – not that it didn't keep out aged reviewer amused for quite some time...). The game has a 'Bankrupt' and a 'Lose a turn' feature so your win is never assured. Harder to describe than play, just take our word for it and grab a copy now and have it on hand for the next time you get a couple of friends over. Plays well in a DOS box (full screen) under Windows and, while it isn't mouse driven, the interface is easy to use. Access this 476kB download from: W31 General Games

The Freesite – Various Resources
If you ever want to wallow around in what's free on the Internet (free webpage and e-mail hosting, product samples, software, graphics, banners, counters, etc, etc, etc) then The Freesite is where you want to go. It has heaps of categories and you can spend a month just following all the leads you'll get from here. Access The Freesite from: Various Resources

WebMarks – W95
WebMarks is a great way to take control of those unwieldy bookmarks or favorites and save them into one concise database of URLs. The bookmarks are presented in an Explorer-type tree and can be altered very easily. Unfortunately there is currently no provision for automatically changing existing bookmarks or favorites into WebMarks but that is promised for the next version. Your Spell – W95 & W31
YourSpell is a simple ASCII text editor (like Notepad, etc) but with an excellent spell checking function. YourSpell arrives with the US-English dictionary but you can download additional dictionaries for UK-English and many other languages (there are a total of nine dictionaries available). YourSpell is really designed as a fast (multi-lingual) spell checker where you copy text from another application into YourSpell and then run the spell checker over it, adding into the program's user dictionary any additional words you choose. This list of additional words is fully accessible and easily edited. Neat. With its in-built ASCII editor (including optional word wrap), you might find that YourSpell is sufficient on its own as your default ASCII text editor, though the program's front end is a little plain (no fancy toolbars for this one). However, many of its functions are accessible from shortcuts which are the optimum way to access functions in any program. You can even access most of its functions from right-clicking the mouse button and using the floating menu which appears. While you can't open more than one file at a time, there is quick access to the past four opened documents. This is a very good program which could easily be dressed up into a killer app. The author has designated this program as 'postcardware'. The Win95 version is a 536kB download and the Win 3.1 version is 563kB – both of which include the US-English dictionary. Additional language dictionaries add between 165kB and 437kB to the download. Access the Win95 version from: W95 Text Programs and the Win 3.1 version from: W31 General Programs

Jouster 4 – W95
This is an unusual arcade-style game where you ride a bird and must either lance other riders above the height of their lance (like a medieval joust) or land on them. Better played with a joystick, you can use keyboard controls with the right and left arrows moving you horizontally. The fire button or spacebar flaps the birds wings and rises you higher. Gravity will bring you back to earth soon enough if you stop flapping or you can use the 'down' arrow to hurry up the descent. This multi-level game allows you to enter at either the first level (by pressing F1), the seventh level (F2) or the 15th level (F3). Utilizing DirectX (which you need) Jouster 4 promises much but still requires more work to make it a 'must have'. Game concept is great but is let down by the grossness of DirectX and the fact it will only work on 256 colors (we presume this is another DirectX 'feature'). Still, the game is addictive and you will get a lot of fun playing it. Access this 3.59MB download from: W95 General Games

BackUpLatest – W95
There are many backup programs for PCs but few are as simple and easy to use as this one. Designed to backup the latest version or a new file, BackUpLatest can be set to automatically backup file(s) or you can back them up manually. The main limitation to BackUpLatest is that it will only backup files less than 1.4MB and it will backup to a maximum of 1.44MB. Not limited to just backing up to drives A and B (as was the previous version), you can use it to backup to another hard drive or even to removable media (a Zip drive, etc). Just to make sure that the correct floppy is being used, the default is to only save to a floppy labeled 'Latest', though you can disable this function. It can be set to only backup files with, or without, specific extensions (you might want to only backup .DOC files, or you may decide you don't want to backup .EXE files, etc) and also to operate automatically at certain times. Very nice. Access this 184kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Anfy Java Applets – W95
This is a set of 18 completely configurable Java applets which will add more than a little spice to your webpages. Covering a huge variety of effects – from flags waving (choose from 34 countries) to GIF/JPG images 'morphing' – you can add your own text to them, change colors, movement rates, etc. To us, the best feature was the instructions. Talk about detailed!!! With a variety of tips and with full modification notes, you couldn't go wrong adding them to your pages as you wanted them, creating your own look and feel. Someone visiting your site wouldn't think that he or she had just seen the same thing on the previous five sites they'd visited – even if they had! If you want a tool you could use to make your pages stand up and say "Hi!" then this is it. When you unpack the 366kB download you will find that it unpacks into 18 separate directories, one for each of the applets and each with its own setup notes (in English and Italian), sample HTML page (so you can see what the effects look like) and the .CLASS files. Warning: unpack this zipped file using a good 32-bit unzipping tool like PowerZip which will not alter the filenames (ie cut the .CLASS extension down to .CLA).
