The Completely Free E-mail Update #29

Issued Feb 10, 1998

Welcome to the twenty-nineth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past three weeks we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

THANKS

We thank you for your patience while we took a two week vacation to re-charge our batteries. We are back on deck now and hope that you will enjoy this latest offering of completely free software.

HTML E-MAIL?

It has been suggested that we produce our e-mail newsletter in HTML format rather than just in ASCII. We are reluctant to do this as there are still many e-mail programs which do not read HTML e-mails properly and this would disadvantage them. When writing to CFS we ask that everyone uses standard ASCII text as we find it causes less hassles with Eudora Light 3.0.5 (Eudora Light 'reads' the HTML correctly but has a problem when you 'reply to' a HTML e-mail).

E-mail clients which are part of IE and Netscape have an option to choose HTML e-mail or ASCII e-mail. In Netscape 4.x, go to Edit/Preferences... and in the displayed dialog box go to Mail & Groups/Messages and remove the check from the box labeled "By default, send HTML messages". In Outlook Express (the mail portion of IE4) go to Tools/Options... and in the dialog box go to the 'Send' page. Under "Mail sending format" check the box marked "Plain Text".

Using HTML in e-mails is like using browser-dependant HTML in websites – it restricts who can view your information. Please remember that others might not have the same browser/e-mail client that you have.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

Netscape Communicator – W95
In the battle of the browsers, Netscape has finally relented and has made the standard version free (now up to version 4.04 if you don't have the latest). This means that it competes more directly with Internet Explorer 4.x. We have used both browsers for quite some time and have always preferred the Netscape product. In head-to-head tests Netscape 4.x has continually proved to be more tenacious that IE4.x, continuing to try and get a problem site after IE4 gave up. We have also preferred the Netscape Bookmarks over IE's Favorites – specially when Favorites are only displayed in alphabetical order which means that it is harder to put things in the order that YOU want. Now that Communicator is completely free there is no excuse not to have both the main browsers on your desktop. Access this 9.2MB download from: W95 Internet Related

Cacheman – W95
Win95 is not the ideal program that some (well, Bully Gates anyway) have claimed. One of the popular speed tweaks is to manually alter the system.ini file to improve the cache restrictions so that available RAM will not be wasted on excessive caching (a problem with anything less than 64MB of RAM). The easiest way to set the optimum levels is with Cacheman which offers a simple system of finding the optimum cache level for your machine by selecting the amount of RAM you have fitted. Re-boot and watch your computer fly! Go grab this fabulous 108kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Budget – W95
We all have to live within a budget but most of us find that we tend to spend 10 per cent more than we earn (you do the math, not a good scenario). However, we can plan our spending by creating a budget, a simple cash flow analysis of our money. Budget is a great program to help you do just that. Regular payments (in and out) can be entered and will automatically be added at whatever periods you specify (mortgage payments, income, etc) as well as individual items. When you've included all the data that you can (and don't forget to add a 'fudge' factor for those unexpected bills), the results can be displayed in one of four ways – transactions, statement, diary or graph. Very neat, very easy, very essential. Access this 633kB download from: W95 General Programs

A Timely Exit – W31 (suitable for W95)
Windows really is a pain to exit from so a nice little utility which will do the job for you is exactly what you need. A Timely Exit is a handy utility which can be 'parked' in one of the four corners of your screen and which displays the time and date. Underneath is an "Exit" button which, when clicked, will quickly shutdown Windows. However, if you right-click on that button the function changes with each click as you cycle through the options: Exit (exit from Windows); Restart (exit Windows then restart); Reboot (exit Windows and then reboot the system); and Close (close the program). This is really 'neat-o'! It mightn't make you coffee, it mightn't even iron your shirt, but what it is designed to do it does with superb ease and aplomb. It's a 94kB download so it's not even going to stretch the friendship with your ISP. Go get this terrific little proggie from: W31 Desktop Utilities

Web-O-Rama – W95
Web-O-Rama is an excellent HTML source-code editor with some really great features. While it fully supports such things as forms, frames and tables, the setup dialog boxes for these are far superior to most offerings from the opposition. There are many, many little features which, on their own might not seem much, are very handy when you're creating webpages. Things like a toolbar button which gives you a choice of 26 characters which can be inserted into your page. Characters like the < sign and the @ sign, etc. Very handy. When you insert an image onto your page it gives you a picture of the image first (to make sure you've got the right one), and automatically inserts the image size into the HTML code (ALL editors should do this – and many don't!). The image insertion dialog box even gives you an indication of how long the download will take for that image at different modem speeds (28.8kB, etc). Pretty snazzy! With excellent handling of forms, tables, frames, sound (you have to do it twice, once for Netscape and once for IE), etc you will love Web-O-Rama. The down side? We weren't thrilled with the appearance of the toolbar buttons and the fact that you could only have one color for tags. This program is written in VB5 and most of the download seems to be VB5 runtime files which go into the C:\Windows\System directory (many of which you probably already have). This leaves the actual directory housing Web-O-Rama holding less than 800kB of unzipped files. Well worth the five-dove rating, you can access this 2.27MB download from: W95 Internet Related

Swap File Overwriter – W95
If you're worried about security then you might not be happy to know that quite often the contents of your Windows swapfile can be accessed and the data from it read. Swap File Overwriter is a program which, in conjunction with a small program which must be downloaded separately, can write over your swap file so others cannot access any data in it. By default, the program places two links in your Start button menu, one to restart your computer and overwrite the swap file in the process, the other to exit from Windows (and also overwrite the swap file). The separate program which you must download is scorch.com which actually does all the work (with a readme file, etc it is only a 14kB download). Access this 243kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Columns – W95
Columns is a solitaire cardgame which is not very easy to win. If you enjoy solitaire cardgames then this is essential for your collection. There is a good selection of cardbacks and the appearance of the cards is excellent. The game itself is absorbing and quite challenging. Top marks to the author, Keith Westley, for this excellent game. Access this 362kB download from: W95 General Games

FooBar – W95
No, not the Foo who "wuz 'ere" but a terrific set of Win95 utilities with its own button bar launcher so you can easily start your favorite programs. Need a 'To-do List' program? Get FooBar. Need an alarm? Get FooBar. Need a calendar? Get FooBar. How about a stopwatch? Get FooBar. What about 'sticky notes', contact manager (address book), time tracker and somewhere to store your passwords? Get FooBar. How about easy access to Explorer or any other program you need in a hurry? Get FooBar. How about an easy way to start your screensaver? Get FooBar. Or to exit or restart Windows... We think you get the picture! FooBar is a very handy utility button bar which can either live on your desktop (on top or as a 'normal' program) or in the traybar (our choice). Fully configurable, FooBar could end up as one of those rare "what did I ever do without it" programs. Still not convinced? Then get a copy yourself and try it out! You can access this fabulous 0.99MB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Linkman – W95
Linkman is a fabulous URL link manager which supports Netscape, IE and Linkman's own file system of bookmarks. Filled to the brim with terrific features, Linkman is much more than just a simple bookmark keeper. Convert between Netscape and IE favorites, or convert them both to Linkman's own database system, launch URLs through the default browser, configure the program any which way but loose (well, you probably could configure it loose if you really wanted to), however you look at it, this is one handy program. Even the supplied list of URLs is extensive to the extreme – over 2500 URLs covering a fantastic array of subjects! This is one of those programs which must be used to be appreciated – no amount of description could do it justice. Access this 921kB download from: W95 Internet Related

Betrayal At Krondor – DOS
This is a role playing game based off Raymond E Feist's excellent books. While this is only a demo, it is fully functionable and very playable. From the Sierra stable, Betrayal At Krondor is a sophisticated game which should prove very popular. Not a small download at 10MB, you can access it from: W31 General Games

Wave Form – W95
Wave Form is one of the better audio file editors we have seen. Handling only WAV files, it can perform over 60 functions on a file – various band-pass filters, reverb, etc – and it also lets you record your WAV file from an audio CD (watch out for copyright problems). The interface is very easy to use and the Help file is not an essential read before starting (unlike some programs!). Supporting MDI (multiple open windows), Wave Form comes in Spanish and English versions. One word of warning, Wave Form is still in beta so care should be taken when installing it onto your system. Access this sensational 755kB download from: W95 Multimedia Programs

WorldClock – W95
This is a handy little utility which gives you the time in four separate timezones throughout the world when you hover there cursor over the icon in the traybar. Set it for any timezones you like, you will have to know the number of hours before or after GMT time for the locations you want displayed. Simple, effective, and easy to install. Do you really want more? Access this 28kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

UPDATES

Clarion, a very good midi/wav/avi player, has been upgraded to version 0.9.3. The author has advised that there is a bug in version 0.9.2 (could you imagine Microsoft admitting that?) and that users should get the latest release immediately. Access this 298kB download from: W95 Multimedia Programs

FreeZip, a small (259kB download) Win95 file compression program has now been upgraded to version 1.2. Now supporting WinNT and using revised code, FreeZip is a really handy little tool to zip or unzip files (including support for long file names). Access this upgraded version from: W95 General Programs

Metric Convert goes to version 1.3. If you need a simple metric converter then you'd go a long way before beating Metric Convert. The program can be set to be 'on top' so it is always easily available. Including copy and paste facilities, it has the ability to make over 24 different conversions, both ways. For example, in Temperature, type, say, 30 in the box and click on either the Fahrenheit (converts 30 degrees C into 86 degrees F) or the Celsius button (converts 30 degrees F into -1.11112 degrees C). The conversion appears in the program's title bar. Access this minuscule 13kB download from: W31 Desktop Utilities

Start Menu Cleaner is now up to version 1.5 (38kB download). This great utility cleans the Start menu by removing unneeded shortcuts and directories. If you have an earlier version, or haven't yet tried out this terrific program, then hop, skip and jump to: W95 Desktop Utilities

Microsoft has upgraded and improved the Dial-up Networking section of Win95 with a 1.2MB download. The new upgrade (msdun12.exe) can be accessed directly from Microsoft: http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/info/dialup.htm
