Welcome to the thirty-second edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS
WindowHTML – W95
Occasionally a program comes along which blows you away. This is one such program. WindowHTML allows you to create a Windows-like HTML page with clickable tabs as the menu system. It looks professional – like someone has spent 100 hours re-creating a Windows 'page' – and the beauty is that you can create a series of pages like this in seconds. It is just so easy that you'll wish it was harder just to justify the fabulous results. True! Create as many tabs as you like (within reason, they have to fit across the page), add a title for your 'Windows' page, and click on 'Generate'. The only other thing you have to do is convert the BMP files which are created by the program into GIF files, and add your HTML code within the marked area on the generated HTML page (this is the actual text on the webpage). The code supplied creates a gray 'window' on a gray page but we have done two pages to show you how adding some simple code to the original can lift the presentation. Go here and see for yourself. We did discover one 'problem' with WindowHTML when we tried to use it with the desktop color scheme we have on our test machine. Everything worked great except that the graphics were not 'clickable' (the imagemap data hadn't been inserted into the HTML page). After discussion with the author it turns out that you first have to create the page using the Window's Default desktop colors, save the HTML pages to another directory and delete the BMP images created. Then change your desktop colors to whatever it is you want and recreate the page, combining the first set of HTML pages with the second set of images (BMP files). This is not as hard or complicated as it sounds but is an undocumented 'feature'. We cannot think of an easier way to create a multiple page menu system than this one, certainly not to get these stunning results. If you haven't already had a look at our example above then go look now. You'll be queuing to get this one! And there's even a little bit of icing on this cake – it's only a 127kB download. Truly! CopyText – W95
This is a surprisingly handy little utility which will copy text from window titles, dialog boxes, list boxes, etc. It will also copy all the text from a window by just placing the cursor in the window and using the hot-keys (the program must be accessed through a keyboard shortcut, details how to do this are in the 'readme' file). To use this utility you must be aware of how Windows creates different levels of windows on your desktop – parent, sibling and child. A small amount of trial and error will soon get you up to speed on this if you don't know these terminologies (and you will have learnt something valuable about Windows!). CopyText will also perform some tricks with windows – allowing you to maximize any window (though some will still not go full screen), Enable/Disable and Show/Hide windows and controls, or place an application window permanently on top of all others or revert it back to its overlapping state. And you thought that CopyText was just another boring utility! And what would you expect the download size for this little beauty would be? 500kB? 300kB? 150kB? Nope, just a tiny 15kB! Submarine – W95
This is a great battleship-type game where you have to guess the location of the mines and blow them up. Presented in two screens, on the left is your screen where the computer must try and guess the location your mines, on the right is a blank grid (10x10) where you must try and guess the computer's mines. Explode a mine and you get an extra turn and quite often an indication that the spaces adjacent are clear. If the computer gets one of your mines it too gets an extra turn but apparently no indication of surrounding 'clear' squares.. Without a Helpfile, and with no Readme file, we were not sure the criteria for getting this extra information but that did not subtract from this very addictive game. With some terrific sound files, Submarine is a fun alternative to a game of Solitaire or FreeCell. Access this 472kB download from: W95 General Games
Taxi – W95
Taxi is an aid to using the Web where you are assumed to be the passenger in a taxicab. You tell the driver your destination and he gets you there. Taxi offers 39 categories to choose your destination from, and then further individual websites within each category. Being UK-based, Taxi offers a predominance of British websites and interests, though you can delete or add sites as much as you like. You can also configure Taxi with multiple users so you can set it up for different members of the family. The graphics are stunning, and the download horrendous, but the overall effect is excellent and the program is easily used by even new Internet users. Downsides? Well, the download is 9.31MB which is not small by any means and the UK server does not have a 'resume' feature for users of ftp downloaders, like the excellent Net Vampire, which can attempt to resume a broken link. We were also not very impressed with the detail of information required for each user which gets transmitted to the parent site. Gender, employment, etc are all demanded by the program. However, Taxi is a worthwhile addition to your Internet experience and is in the 'highly recommended' category, specially for newcomers. Access it from: W95 Internet Related
Event Calendar – W31 (suitable W95)
Event calendar is a simple personal information manager (PIM) which gives you a choice of sections under which to place information. A lack of Helpfile is not the problem it could be because the program is very simple to use. Access this 508kB download from: W31 General Programs
PicMan – W95
Gotta a collection of JPG files which need organizing? Like to have a quick viewer for those JPG files? Guess you're a candidate for PicMan. This handy program will allow you to view a JPG file (in the pane or full view) and/or move it from one directory to another. It sports two Explorer-like panes which you can use to move your files around with and if you highlight a file you get it displayed in all it's glorious color. Word Of Fortune – W31 (suitable W95)
Based off "Wheel Of Fortune", Word Of Fortune is a game where you have to guess a word by clicking on letters of the alphabet. You get a miss rate equal to the number of letters in the word so a seven letter word would allow you seven misses. The database has a reported 24,600 words in it, many of which are quite hard. This is quite an addictive game but suffers because you can't tell what letters you've already clicked on unless they have been used in the keyword. Word Of Fortune has a number of levels which improve gameplay. Access this 408kB download from: W31 General Games
ClipText – W31 (suitable W95)
Wow! This is one terrific and essential utility. ClipText is a repository of nine pieces of preset text which can be accessed via a hotkey (F12 is the default). The selected text is then automatically inserted into the Windows' clipboard. If, like us, you hate retyping the URL for your website then you can have it instantly inserted into the Windows' clipboard. Then all you have to do is Ctrl-V and the URL (or whatever text you choose) is pasted into the open document at the cursor. This is just soooo easy! We have a couple of pro forma responses we use all the time to let WebAuthors know that their site is now listed on one of our websites. Now all we have to do is open the e-mail client (trusty Eudora Light) and paste the message in. ClipText can be used for any text in any circumstance where text can be inserted from the clipboard. You might want your return address stored in ClipText so it can be quickly pasted into a letter, or a signature script for the same letter. ClipText can be configured to automatically close once you've retrieved your text and you can even have it setup so that each of the nine buttons representing the nine pieces of text can be access with a hotkey (Alt-Q or whatever the first letter of the button title might be. Like with WindowHTML above, the icing on the cake of this terrific utility is the download size – 50kB! What are you waiting for? Get ClipText from: W31 Desktop Utilities
Meteor Storm – W95
Space type shoot-em-up arcade games are everywhere but occasional one appears which combines good graphics with an enjoyable scenario. Meteor Storm is one such game. You are in a space ship which is being bombarded by meteors. You have to destroy the meteors before they destroy you... This is a simple but addictive game with good sound and, as we said, good animated graphics. No complicated storyline or missions, just bang and the meteors explode (or bang as the meteors hit you and you explode!). If you want some good uncomplicated fun then go grab this 1.21MB download from: W95 General Games
File ID Generator – W95
If you're a software author then you will understand the importance of including a 'file_id.diz' file with your program so it can be properly listed on directories and so users can quickly check out the value of a program without doing a full install (particularly useful for CD-ROM based programs). File ID Generator does just that, generates a 'file_id.diz' file with your information on it. Fill in the blanks and the text file is created. Simple as... UPDATES
Web-O-Rama, an excellent source-code HTML editor with a host of great features, has been upgraded to version 4.0. Grab the entire version 4.0 zip file or just get the EXE file for existing users (a 250kB download). Access it from: W95 Internet Related
Clarion, the audio (midi/wav/avi) player, has been upgraded yet again, this time to version 0.9.4. Mainly a bug fix, existing users are urged to update to the newer version. Access it from: W95 Multimedia Programs
Solitude For Windows has been upgraded to version 1.12 with the addition of two new games (FreakCell and Westcliff) plus some enhancements and bug fixes. It also has a new, and easier, menu interface. If you like solitaire cardgames then Solitude is just for you with some 19 games in the one program.
