The Completely Free E-mail Update #4

Issued Jul 29, 1997

Welcome to the fourth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new freeware programs, including the ones listed below (in no particular order). Drop on in and take a look and then write back and tell us what you think.

We have finally added a Win95 games section (see, we DO listen!) and have already scored some terrific Win95-specific games. More will be added regularly. Win95 users, don't forget that all the Win 3.1 and DOS games will work under Win95 (though some of the DOS games might require you to boot directly into DOS and not use a 'DOS box' under Windows). If you have trouble running games under the DOS version of Win95 then we suggest that you download OpenDOS 7.01 (see our Win 3.1 & DOS page) and boot directly into OpenDOS (also see the '95 Ultimate Booter', below).

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing -- us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can ammend the CFS website.

FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS

Bedtris

A Tetris clone. There are optional files with alternative music, background and tile appearance which adds to the desirability of this game. If you don't already have a version of Tetris (we didn't!) snaffle this one. The basic download is 363kB. We preferred the Gutchtris layout which added another 3kB. Access it all from:

W95 General Games

InstantON Scheduler

Schedule your computer to automatically carry out tasks. Supporting power management, use it to 'wake up' the computer, answer faxes, then go back to 'sleep', or do other tasks after normal hours. From Intel, this handy 958kB download can be accessed from:

W95 Desktop Utilities

AppletFX Freeware Edition

This package includes 20 sensational Java applets which can be altered to suit your requirements. Not only does this download include the Visual Applet Configurator, it also has a tutorial to help you modify an applet so that you can get just the right look and feel. This program shot to the number one slot on the 'Internet Related' page, which indicates just what we thought of it. NOTE: Visual Applet Configurator only works with Netscape 2.0 (or later) and Internet Explorer 3.0 (or later). This 2.76MB download can be accessed from:

Solitude

Featuring 16 terrific solitaire card games for the whole family, Solitude has taken top slot on our new W95 Games page. It has a simple, even amateurish, interface page but the cardgames themselves are excellent, with good clean cardfaces and smooth operation. It has all the favorites plus a few even we hadn't heard of before! Each game has its own help screen which gives basic rules and instructions on how to play, odds of winning, and an indication of whether the game is a 'quickie' or will take some time to finish. Access this 1MB download from:

W95 General Games

95 Ultimate Booter

Control your W95 boot-up with this handy utility. Boot into the Win95 'C:\>' prompt, the Win95 GUI, the boot-up menu, or the old DOS (and it even tells you how to re-create your old DOS if it was lost when you first loaded Win95 or if you wanted to use a new DOS, like OpenDOS, as an alternative). At a tiny 35K download, access it from:

W95 Windows Extras

WBOG

The old word game of Boggle has had an electronic update with this excellent version. Create words words from adjacent letters arranged in a grid -- built-in dictionary, etc. Get this 169kB download from:

W95 General Games

Stop Watch

Handy three-digit stopwatch for all sorts of timing functions (like how long you've been on the Net during a session). A largish download at 1MB but includes VBRun files (should be optional?). We had trouble setting up the program because it was looking for Stop Watch.EX_ but was offered Stop_wat.ex_ instead. A quick touch of 'F2' renaming soon had us up and running (like a stopwatch?). Access this program from:

FREE WIN3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS

Mortal Pong

An update of the old (ping) pong paddle game, but now with 'attitude'. Win or lose, it's worth it just to get an eyeful and an earful of the great effects and comments. A DOS game which plays fine under Windows, Mortal Pong is for everyone, young or old. A 331kB download which can be accessed from:

W3.1 & DOS

Kung Foo Kim

Immensely funny Win 3.1 game of 'defense' featuring the Kung Foo talents of KFK (with a little help from you) as he fends off all sorts of obstacles, etc. Covering nine levels, there's much here to keep you amused for hours. Quality graphics like those from this game makes you wonder why it's free. Guarranteed to have you come back for more, and more, and more! Top of our Win 3.1 Games section and the best freeware game we've found on the Net so far (tell us if you know a better one). Download this 1.35MB game from:

W3.1 & DOS

Megapede 95

Based off the old Space Invaders game, Megapede 95 (it's a DOS game, but it runs OK under Win95) is hilarious fun for the wrinklies who used to play Space Invaders 10+ years ago, and for the younger folk who have a good sense of humor. Like Mortal Pong (these come from the same 'stable'), there are fun audio and visual effects to keep you playing to the end. Access this 1.28MB download from:

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM OF THE WEEK

Microsoft GIF Animator

Microsoft's GIF Animator is a terrific tool for putting life into your GIF89a images. Easy to use, GIF Animator gives you an easy interface where you can insert individual GIF images (start from the last one) until you have the required number of frames (like a cartoon series). We advise no more than 12 frames in an image or the GIF files will get too large for easy downloading. Four to six frames is even better. Once the frames are in place it's an easy matter to add the animation (usually a continuous loop) and the delay between each frame in one-hundreths of a second (smaller numbers make the image animate faster -- mostly delay times are larger than '10'). You can add comments on to each frame (which don't appear) or remove comments placed there by some other animator programs. MS GIF Animator supports transparent colors and its easy to remove the background from your favorite GIF (whether it's animated or not).
But there's a problem. Microsoft has advised that it will be removing the MS GIF Animator from its webpages on July 28, and at this stage we have not received an answer to our request to host a copy on our server. Go get this 1.1MB download now while you still have a chance. Access it from:

FINALLY

We've hardly scratched the surface of what was added over the last week. Just because there are a lot of games listed above don't think that we didn't add some 'heavyweight' programs too. Go check out the entire site and be prepared to be pleasantly pleased at what goodies you find hiding under a cabbage patch. In the words of the immortal TV 'corporal' in Rin Tin Tin... "Yo Rinny!" (Just think, Rusty would be an old gray-haired man now!)
