The Completely Free E-mail Update #40

Issued Apr 28, 1998

Welcome to the fortieth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

COMPLETELY FREE SOFTWARE

JMK JavaScript Author – W95
This is a terrific JavaScript editor which will help you create some sensational JavaScript routines to include on your webpages. Complete with one of the best and clearest tutorials we have read on the subject by author Stefan Koch, you will soon be creating your own JavaScript routines which will amaze your site's visitors. JavaScript Author comes complete with a cut-down browser and an ftp client so you can check and upload your amended pages from the same 'suite'. It also comes with a neat 'find' utility, though it can't recurse sub-directories. JMK has included five Wizards to help create JavaScript routines so you can, say, include a JavaScript calculator on your webpages without having to learn the code. One problem with JavaScript Author is that some of the scripts are not suitable for Internet Explorer so, like the HTML code you write, it should be checked on both major browsers. We hope that future versions will be more compatible, though the way modern browsers are evolving it is nearly impossible to keep up with changes and differences. If you want to become a JavaScript guru, or just want to add the odd piece of script to your homepage, JMK JavaScript Author is an essential download. Note: the Helpfile is not in English and cannot be read with an English version of Windows, but the tutorials and the program are both in English. Complete with the VB5 runtime library, you can access this 4.94MB download from: W95 Internet Related

WinDepth – W95
This is a terrific – and addictive – underwater shoot-em-up. You're in a battleship and beneath you there are hordes of enemy submarines, jellyfish, etc all trying to blow you up with mines, missiles, etc. Drop depthcharges on them and, if two or more subs are close together, watch them all blow up (heh, heh, heh). Like a modern (???) version of space invaders, though up-side-down, WinDepth will keep you amused for hours. Graphics are excellent, sounds are too, animation is very good and the whole game is one you will come back to time after time after time. An old theme but made very playable. Many levels, and it really starts to get challenging after level 10 (level 2 for our geriatric staff!), join us playing this great time waster. Note, while the Helpfile and the readme.txt file are both in Japanese, the game itself is in English. Grab this 318kB download from: W95 General Games

Desktop-Lok Platinum – W95
If you worry about uninvited people using your computer then Desktop-Lok Platinum is the utility program from you. Fully password protected (and the author charges $20 to 'unlock' your computer should you lose that password!), Desktop-Lok Platinum presents a dummy Win95 desktop and, when the keyboard/mouse is used, a password dialog box appears. Don't have the password and you don't get in! Caution, unless you have a good reason to lock your desktop then we don't recommend password protection. Passwords can be too easily lost and most people just don't have material so sensitive it requires protection. Still, if you do have that need, this is the best we've seen in this field. Access this 1.91MB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

AllSee – W95
This is one of the most unusual image converters and viewers we have seen. Using a three pane window system, its features include: viewing/conversion of JPG, GIF (not animated though), PCX, BMP, PNG and TIF file types (certainly all the most common bitmap formats); batch file conversions (convert a group of, say, BMP files into JPG files); slide show; setting up an image as Windows' wallpaper; turning an image into a 15-piece puzzle; ability to view thumbnail, fit-to-screen-size and 100%-size images; etc. If you double-click on an image, AllSee will load Windows Paint so you can edit it (there is no inbuilt image editing). There are probably dozens of features we haven't yet discovered! In fact, that is the biggest problem with AllSee. Not only doesn't it have any Helpfile (though there is fly-over balloon help), it doesn't even have any readme files where its features are explained. To top it off, it doesn't always use Windows' conventions (ie, Ctrl-C for Copy). Aaaarrrggghhh! Such a terrific program decimated by poor integration and 'packaging'. If you are prepared to put some effort into learning its awkward interface and conventions, you will be rewarded by a program you will probably rave about for months – it really is that good! Of course, it helps to be a masochist... If this review has awakened your interest, invest in this 750kB download and at least have a look see at AllSee. Grab it from: W95 Graphics Programs

Smart Cleaner – W95
Smart Cleaner is a simple utility which removes unwanted files from your C:\ drive. You are given the option of selecting to remove one of the following filetypes: *.BAK; *.OLD; *.TMP; *.~MP; *.GID; MSCREATE.DIR; FILE_ID.DIZ; or CHKLIST.*. You can also select them all. After you have selected an individual filetype you are given a very brief description of what that file does (or doesn't do) and if you accept that then the utility searches through the C:\ drive for those files. Before deleting you have the option of removing any files from the list. This is one handy app. However, it doesn't check any other drives and the download is a rather hefty 1.78MB. Of course, the download would not be as large if it didn't include all those standard DLL, etc files which you've probably got from other programs! The program's interface is clean and easy to use and the lack of Helpfile is not a problem. We think you'll like this one. Note: we are linking to an earlier version of this program which was freeware. That latest version is now shareware. Access it from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Wiz eleven – W95
This is an excellent cardgame where the object is to match up cards to equal 11, 12, 13 or 14, depending on how the game is set. For example, if you have 11 set in the options menu you could click on 7 and 4 or 6, 4 and Ace so that the total cards clicked equals 11. There is an optional timer which will stop a game if you haven't completed it within the stipulated time (not recommended for the first few times you play – just until you get yourself up to speed). Similar to Pyramid, this game varies from the standard Pyramid game in quite a few ways. Try it to see! With a download of only 216kB you'll hardly even notice the download time and you'll get a lot of fun out of this game. Good graphics, good presentation, addictive gameplay – what more could you want? Go get this one from: W95 General Games

Foneword 32 – W95
Ever wondered what your telephone number would be as a vanity number? For example, if your telephone number was 766-7883 you could use the word COMPUTE as your vanity number. Or maybe BOOR 883 if you thought that described you (neither ANN nor CON should use this particular vanity number!). How did we work out what numbers create what words? Simple, we downloaded Foneword 32 and used it to search through its database of about 80,000 one to ten letter words which don't use Q and Z (not all handsets use those digits). This easy to use program which looks like a telephone handset gives you the option of just giving whole words (like COMPUTE), giving some real words (like BOOR 883 – we won't use the CON or ANN example!), or offering just letters (handy if you have an acronym you can use). Presentation of the program is excellent – probably much better than the occasional use you may give this program – and it is very functional within the terms of its intended use. It even beeps like a real phone when you click on the keys! If Foneword 32 is for you, grab your copy from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Web2Text – W95 (W31 version also available)
If you've ever tried to manually convert a web (HTML) document into ASCII text while retaining much of the original formatting and keeping the URLs intact and readable you will appreciate the amount of work required. Web2Text will do just that and you will have to do the minimum cleanup afterwards. Even if you only do it very occasionally you will thank the author profusely. Not only is there a Win95 version (with a 162kB download), there is also a Win 3.1 version (128kB download) from the same site. Get both versions from: W95 Internet Related

Slicer – W95
If you have a need to spit up large files so they can be transported on floppy disks, then Slicer could come in right handy. Virtually idiot-proof (our resident staff idiot was able to use this one!), Slicer has a super-simple interface – just select the file to split and the size of the media (normally 1.44MB) – click on "Slice Them" and it's done in a flash. You can also split a number of files at once, and each is treated as if it was a unique file split. The first file of any file split is a BAT file and the others have S10, S11, S12, etc extensions. This simple program has a few questionable areas. Firstly, preset sizes available for splitting are (in MB) 2.88, 2.00, 1.44, 1.02, 1.00, 0.75 and 0.50. Notice that while there is support for 2.88MB floppies, there is none for 1.2MB (though you can use 1.02 – actually 1,023kB or 0.99MB) 720k or 360k. There is also no way in which you can split a file to another directory, you can only use the directory which housed the original file. You must also have Slicer loaded, and registered with Windows, for the BAT file to work. With these limitations in mind, Slicer is still a good file splitter which is easy to use. Most people would only be using 1.44MB floppies so the lack of specific support for other disk sizes is almost irrelevant. There is also normally no hassle in having the program loaded on the machine which will receive the split files – even if you have to have it on a separate disk. If you are looking for a small and simple to use file spitter, then access this 353kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

UPDATES

Sandra from SiSoft – the best Win95 hardware diagnostic tool we have found – is now up to version 2.2 with a download size increased to 2.15MB. Sandra will tell you everything from the manufacturer's name of the motherboard you are using (and its serial number) to information about your operating system. If you are using an older version, or haven't yet tried this fabulous program, get the latest version from: W95 Desktop Utilities
