The Completely Free E-mail Update #42

Issued May 12, 1998

Welcome to the forty-second edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. This is a selection of the programs we've added over the past week.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

COMPLETELY FREE SOFTWARE

MultiLaunch – W95
If you've ever been frustrated by Win95's inability to associate more than one program with an file extension then PC Magazine's MultiLaunch is for you. This utility allows you to have two, three or more files associated with an extension so you can choose which program you want to open a particular file. This does not alter the main program associated with that extension (so if you double left-click on a file in Explorer the main program associated with that extension opens it) but adds right-click functionability to the file extension. Right click on a file and you will get the option to "Open" the file with the main program, or go to the alternative program(s) which is also listed in the right-click dialog box. For example, you might have GIF files associated with CorelDraw 8 but if you just want to view a GIF file and not edit it you might have an image viewer like PhotoImpact Viewer, or FreeView, as the alternative associated program. Instead of left-clicking on a GIF file you right-click and select the viewer. Easy. MultiLaunch adds itself to the Property dialog box and is accessed through that. A handy utility, MultiLaunch is a 229kB download which can be accessed from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Bluette – W95
Bluette is a visual Java development tool, sometimes called a RAD (Rapid Application Development) tool. Requiring JDK 1.0.2 or better, it helps write Java applications and applets in a visual environment. Its features include: menu event processing; an image component; JDB is available; smart compilation; JDK 1.1x compiler adoption (not code generation); and an alignment palette (0.63+). With a superb Helpfile which gives great information about Java applications, Bluette is an ideal tool for programmers and budding programmers who wish to create their own Java applications. FastText – W95
FastText is a great little utility (only a 12kB download!) to store and make easily accessible preset text strings. For example, you could store your e-mail address and then, whenever you needed to insert your e-mail address into a form or some other document, you could bring us FastText with a shortcut key (Ctrl-Shift-F is suggested), click onto your e-mail address to insert it into the Windows' Clipboard, and then paste it into your document. Quite large documents can be stored in FastText (certainly much more than a simple e-mail address – we tried the contents of this newsletter and it worked OK) so you can really use it as a functional tool rather than just a toy. Likewise, there doesn't seem to be a real limit on the number of entries you can have - 15 are displayed in the window but when more than 15 are loaded a scroll bar appears and you can just look through the list for what you want. You are offered a title for the text string, which is what appears in the program's window, and then highlighting that name and clicking on "Paste" will insert it into the Clipboard. The more we use FastText the more we like it and can see the real value of it (many utilities have more of a "Gee Whiz" appeal rather than being truly practical). Access it from: W95 Desktop Utilities

JMK Address Keeper – W95
Address Keeper is a simple address book program with a number of nice features but the most important is in its simplicity. You can create multiple databases in Address Keeper, which is handy for keeping categorical lists of people (friends, business acquaintances, etc). You can also print out your details, plus you can copy the contents of individual entries into the Windows' Clipboard for pasting into other programs. Address Keeper does not automatically dial your contacts like some PIMs, nor it does not automatically setup an e-mail message for them, but as an electronic address book it is excellent. Simple and effective are two adjectives we feel adequately describe Address Keeper. Access this 817kB download from: W95 General Programs

Spam Hater – W31 (suitable W95)
Spam Hater is a neat program with a single reason for its existence... It will integrate with most e-mail clients to fight the effects of spam. While it has an effective database of abuse messages you can send to spam mailers, we don't recommend that you ever reply to a spammer because all you are doing is confirming that your e-mail address is active. More important, Spam Hater will generate an e-mail message to be sent to the issuing ISP telling him or her of the activities of the spammer. All messages are editable, and many are quite rude and abusive, but there is a good selection and you are sure to find the appropriate message. Spam Hater also has built-in WHOIS and TRACEROUTE facilities to help track down the spammer. With good Usenet integration, Spam Hater is a useful tool in the fight to clean up the Net. Trickle Down – W95
There are plenty of 'Connect-4' type games where the idea is to connect up four dots, balls, checkers or whatevers in a row while trying to block your opposition. In this case the opposition is the computer, but this game is different from the others in that your opponent can 'learn' from its mistakes when played in the Advanced level. Too many games of this type get boring when you learn how its been programmed and can then beat the program with this knowledge. However Trickle Down is one that can be played, and played, and played (assuming that you have masochistic tendencies!). Games can be saved, you can undo moves, and games can be replayed. Graphics are fair without being brilliant, gameplay is excellent, and addictiveness (?) is very good. Definitely worth the download. Access this 484kB download from: W95 General Games

SiteAid – W95
SiteAid is an HTML source code editor with a built-in browser and features lots of nice Wizards and an assortment of tag insertion methods. Extensive use of tool bars makes access to tags, etc very easy but dramatically reduces the working area for the document. Open documents are accessed through a neat tab system and the whole package is very professionally produced. Help is either on-line or via an additional 542kB download which puts the Help files on your desktop (well worth the extra download). We were disappointed that there was no tag colorization as this has become the norm amongst the better HTML source code editors because it makes it so much easier to separate tags from text. You are requested to register your copy of SiteAid to remove a nag screen when you exit from the program and which gives you access to future discounts on a proposed shareware version. Registration is free and is not invasive. Overall we were impressed with the variety and ease of use of the Wizards and the extensive tabbed toolbar system and the tabbed document tray. We were less impressed with the actual working area of the document and the lack of tag colorization. If you looking for a HTML source code editor you could do much worse than try SiteAid. Access this 2.27MB download (plus the Help files if required) from: W95 Internet Related

Imp's DeskList – W95
DeskList is a small utility which sits in the desktray near the clock and which gives you instant access to the desktop folders which are normally hidden under a mountain of programs. With a 15kB download and an executionable file of only 28kB, DeskList does not suck up valuable resources while waiting to be of use. We were so impressed with the simplicity of this tiny utility that we have changed utilities and now have DeskList loading automatically on start-up in place of our previous desktop-accessing utility. Try this one, you'll be as impressed with it as we were. Access deskList from: W95 Desktop Utilities

MakeNav – W95
MakeNav is an HTML index generator for graphics and multimedia files. With optional sub-directory recurse, MakeNav presents an HTML document comprising JPG, GIF, AVI, WAV, MPG, MPEG, JPEG, ZIP, MID, MIDI, TXT, DOC, XLS, PPT, WRI, CRD, and BMP files in the directory or directories nominated. The information is presented with either default.htm or index.htm filenames with a separate HTML file for each directory. Using frames, the index generated is in the left hand frame and images are opened in the right hand frame. If you need to generate an index of files of this type, then MakeNav is an excellent way to do it. Access this 623kB download from: W95 Internet Related

UPDATES

Time Stamp – which keeps track of working time for billing – has been updated to version 2.0. This is a major upgrade and introduces more functionability. With this goes a larger file download size to 597kB. Access Time Stamp from: W95 Desktop Utilities
