The Completely Free E-mail Update #43

Issued May 19, 1998

Welcome to the forty-third edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. This is a selection of the programs we've added over the past week.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

COMPLETELY FREE SOFTWARE

X-COM: Interceptor (demo) – W95
X-COM: Interceptor is an outer space shoot ’em up which features sensational graphics, animation and sound. The gameplay's not too bad either! While this demo is not fully functional (are any?), at least you can get in there and really mix it with the aliens. Requiring a reasonably high-end machine running DirectX 5 with 45 meg of hard disk space free and a graphics card with a minimum of 2MB of RAM, X-COM: Interceptor gives you more than the five minutes of fun some demos offer. Here is the description as supplied: "X-COM has left Earth and taken to the stars to fight the alien threat in the latest installment in the award-winning X-COM series. As X-COM Commander-in-Chief, you are in charge of managing star bases and hopping right into the cockpit of X-COM fighter craft where you'll go head-to-head with the alien menace." Now doesn't that sound like 10,000 other space shoot 'em ups? Still, we don't feature that many demos, mainly because they are usually so limited they are unplayable, but we really thought you'd like this one. The downside to this listing is the download size – 22.9MB! If you have a fast Internet connection (plus a resumable ftp client like Net Vampire), shoot your way over and grab a copy from: W95 General Games

Visual IRC – W95
ViRC, as Visual IRC is usually known, is a terrific 'chat' client with some very professional features. Some of these features are: easy-to-use Office '97-like interface with moveable toolbars; active scripting support for writing scripts in languages other than ViRCScript; novice setup mode for users new to IRC; built-in flood protection; DCC whiteboard feature for collaborative drawing and sharing of ideas; DCC performance graph (click on the system menu of a DCC transfer window, and click on "DCC performance graph" to turn it on); video conferencing; ObjectViRCScript object-based extensions to ViRCScript programming language; full logging capabilities; new LagScope for measuring how lagged you are from the server; and ViRCScript Publishing Wizard. And that is just a short list of the major features! What we liked was the walk-through for IRC newbies so they can be introduced to the world of chat with ease. ViRC is virtually out of date the minute you download it and you should keep your eye on the ViRC website for updates (can even be weekly!). Downsides? Only a few built-in servers included (though you can add as many as you like) – we would definitely like to see many more. If you are using any other IRC client you would be doing yourself a big favor if you tried out ViRC. If you are just starting out in chat (or want to but are afraid to take the plunge) then ViRC is probably the best IRC client around – at any price! get you copy from: W95 Internet Related

Canfield & Beleaguered Castle – W31 (suitable for W95)
These are two cardgames from Solitaire King which are now listed in the Win 3.1 General Games section. We have other Solitaire King cardgames linked to this page and they all have good, clear card faces, game options, and good playing instructions. They are quite small downloads (about 60kB) which means that they load fast once you get over the mandatory nag screen. If you like cardgames you will like these Solitaire King versions. Get them from: W31 General Games

FoxMail – W95 (W31 version also available)
FoxMail is one foxy e-mail client. Its small download (compared to, say, Eudora Light) belies the power under the 'hood'. The list of features reads like a e-mail user's wish list and includes: fast in sending/receiving/decoding messages; remote mailbox management (delete the messages on server before download); local mailbox encryption; address book supports mail list; preview window (to browse message contents easily); attach any size file to your message; auto dial your network; MIME and UUEncode compatible; retrieve mail from multiple POP3 accounts; Mailbox Assistant (automatically dispatches the incoming messages to different boxes according to the custom-defined rules); browse HTML format mail with an IE browser; and available in both English and Chinese versions. With a sophisticated look and great functionability, FoxMail really is a terrific e-mail client. It also comes with a small utility (which can also be downloaded separately) to notify you of e-mail so you don't even need the your main e-mail client active to keep an eye on your mail when you're on-line. It also comes in a 16-bit version (not reviewed) The download sizes are 766kB for the Win95 version and 290kB for the Win 3.1 version, and you can access both from: W95 Internet Related

LiteSTEP – W95
LiteSTEP is a Win95 shell replacement which gives it a NextSTEP look and feel. If you didn't know, NextSTEP it is a Linux shell. Linux users (to whom this program is obviously aimed) will feel right at home with the Wharf toolbar and the AfterSTEP clock, temperature monitor, WinAMP plugin, Virtual Window Manager, etc and the multiple desktop facility is very functional. It is also a neat desktop for disgruntled Win95 users who are either sick and tired of Big Brother or just want something a bit different to impress their nerdy friends. Warning: we would not recommend this shell replacement unless you are very confident getting your hands dirty in the bowels of the Win95 shell. If you can handle Linux then not only will LiteSTEP will be like a breath of fresh air to you, but you should be more than capable of making the Win95 ini and Registry amendments required to get LiteSTEP into gear (we all know that Linux users can do almost anything with their PCs – they have to if they want to use Linux!). EditPad – W95
When a someone writes in and says "I use EditPad over one year. It's really best text editor!" we stop and look. Yes, there are plenty of NotePad replacement programs (which doesn't say much for the original!) but most of them are clones of each other. Seen one, seen them all. Yes, we do list a few of the better ones – ones which offer something a little more – and we are pleased to add EditPad into that category. EditPad has a pleasant interface which is very configurable, it can handle multiple documents (with an easy to use tab system which all text editors should emulate) and is available in 10 different languages. Features include block functions (insert a text file into the middle of a document or save part of your document to disk), reopen menu that lists the last 16 files opened, easily configure the open and save dialog file filters, read or write files with UNIX or Mac attributes (LF or CR only) as well as Win/DOS formats (CR & LF), ANSI/DOS text conversion, etc. There is even MAPI support for e-mailing. El neato! We told you that EditPad wasn't just your average ASCII text editor. With full font selection (both fixed and variable widths), and control over your background/text color, EditPad was looking better and better. With a download of only 291kB this is one text editor we suggest you grab – even if just to check out some of the other features we haven't had room to mentioned. Access this great editor from: W95 Text Programs

RusCell Malachite – W31 (suitable W95)
RusCell Malachite is a Russian version of the terrific solitaire cardgame, FreeCell. Complete with Russian fantasy figures and a choice of card backs and background, RusCell is a hi color game which requires an 800x600 screen (or larger) with 16-bit colors as a minimum. Graphics are sensational (hence the display requirements) with good clear easy to read card fronts and colorful card backs, though the program runs a little slowly for our tastes. Like the free Microsoft version, RusCell Malachite has semi-auto play where cards will automatically dock themselves in the 'home' cell (with the Aces). Game instructions, in the form of a Helpfile, are sufficient to help get you playing. If you are a FreeCell collector, or just like to play the odd game, RusCell is definitely one to get. Time Thingy – W95
Yeh, we love the name too! Time Thingy is a small floating time/date display which is designed to replace the Win95 clock which takes up valuable desktray space. Displaying either the time (24-hour clock) or the date (using local date display – ie mth/day/yr, day/mth/yr, etc) and offering the facility to change the systems clock and or date, Time Thingy can be positioned anywhere you like on the desktop so that it is handy but not in the way. With a minuscule 7kB download, Time Thingy won't hog your on-line time while it downloads. Access this terrific little utility from: W95 Desktop Utilities

WinTrasher Pro – W95
If you've ever wanted to access some of the 'non accessible' parts of Win95 then WinTrasher Pro could be the answer for your prayer. Apart from giving you access to the full Win95 start-up options, it allows you to access dozens of hidden features which you probably didn't even know that you could get at. With a built-in system backup utility (with a restore utility too), WinTrasher Pro will even automatically clear the Cookie histories and the URL histories at logon. It even offers you access to the Product Id number (from the CD-ROM). There are many, many options, features and points of access that we couldn't even begin to list them all – the best thing would be to get a copy yourself and try it. You won't be disappointed. UPDATES

Prime Style – the superb CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) editor – has an 111kB patch to fix a couple of annoying bugs. Downloads prior to May 12 require the patch. You can access the Prime Style website via: W95 Internet Related

ImageSize – a terrific add-on to the Properties' menu in Explorer – has been upgraded. From just giving the size of BMP and GIF files (plus some other data), it now supports BMP, PCX, GIF, JPEG and TIFF formats and the download size has been increased from 9kB to 32kB. This is one utility we use regularly as it gives us a quick way to size our images. With GIF89a images it also offers information on the GIF blocks (including COMMENTS and CONTROL data). All formats include information on the color depth (256 colors, etc) and the compression ratio (if any). Sensational stuff! If you got a copy a while ago, or if you haven't yet discovered this fabulous utility, get yours from: W95 Windows Extras

TrackWords for Windows – the classic word cube game – has been upgraded to version 1.21. This new version adds user-selectable grid sizes (3x3, 4x4 and 5x5) as well as additional game-play options (word size restriction, minimum word size, etc) and an enhanced dictionary. Download size has increased to 344kB. Access TrackWords from: W95 General Games
