The programs listed here are completely free for non-commercial use, even though some may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

Decisive Battles of WWII: The Ardennes Offensive – W95
This is a very playable game demo which revolves around the "Battle Of The Bulge" from the European theater of World War II. In the demo you are on the German side and the gameplay uses 'default' settings. Still, you will enjoy the superb presentation, the detail, the sound effects, graphics, etc. Very professional and a lot of fun for battle aficionados. We won't say more about this demo except that if you like battle gameplay, and if you like World War II scenarios, then "The Ardennes Offensive" will feel like ambrosia. You'll need 16 meg of hard disk space and some patience (a manual would have been helpful) but the rewards are worth it. Battle your way over here to get this 6.1MB download: W95 General Games
TrayMenu – W95
There are many utilities around which will give you quick access to your desktop folders (which get hidden as soon as you start opening programs). Most are quite good and they normally live in the desktray section of your screen near the clock. We have use them for a long time, only replacing them when a better one came along. We have just replaced it! TrayMenu does give you instant access to your desktop folders – like the other ones – but it offers much more. For a start, you can access individual programs within those desktop folders. This means that you have access directly to a program and not just to folder which holds it. The program also gives instant access to Windows Explorer, a terrific "Run..." command-line dialog box with a 'stay-on-top' command. It also gives instant access to the Display Properties section of Control Panel and allows you to hide the desktop icons. Now we know that many other programs can do these things but this is the first time we've seen them all in one handy utility. Yes, we ARE impressed! Quick and easy access to your desktop is essential. Without doubt, TrayMenu is the best utility we've found to carry out this task. Downside? Not that we've found! Theophilos – W95
Theophilos is an excellent multilingual, multimedia Holy Bible. The basic download includes the Authorized Version (KJV) of the Bible in English, Matthew Henry's Commentary, the text of three Creeds (Apostles, Athanasian and Nicene), Easton's Bible Dictionary, 11 verse illustrations and 34 WAV files. You can also add your own multimedia experience by recording verse readings (WAV or MP3 formats) with the built-in recorder, or adding images to specific verses (BMP or JPG formats). You can also add other language versions (Czech or Romanian are offered free at the download site), the Apocrypha, Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary (over 2,000 Bible names) "Confessions Of St Augustin", and "Homilies of St John Chrysostom on Matthew". The main program includes an excellent search feature (it took less than 16 seconds to tell us that there were 64,040 instances of the word 'the' in 24,127 verses – though that information is purely academic!). Program layout is excellent and there are buttons on the three levels of toolbar for most tasks (often with keyboard shortcuts as well). We wuz impressed! Mouse Trap – W95
Mouse Trap is a simple but effective way of locking your mouse cursor (password protected) so no-one else can use your computer. Not only is your cursor confined to the small area bordered by the utility's screen, but Ctrl-Alt-Del, Alt-Tab, and Ctrl-Esc are all disabled so an unauthorized user cannot bypass this program and use your computer. With an auto-hide feature so it's not too obvious (there's just an icon in the desktray, near the clock), Mouse Trap is an effective tool to keep your computer secure while you leave it unattended. Sokoban v2.2.5 – W31 (suitable W95)
Sokoban is a classic puzzle game which means "warehouse man" in Japanese. You are presented with a 'warehouse' which contains boxes which must be stacked into the storeroom. Your job is to push the boxes there without blocking yourself in or not being able to access the boxes (they can only be pushed). With 50 levels (there's a 'save' feature so you can resume where you left off) you have a huge scope for exercising your frustrations as the levels get harder and harder. Sokoban is really a great puzzle which does require genuine thought and ingenuity to master. With a good Helpfile, this is an excellent puzzle game for those days which never seem to end. Scrappy '98 Pro – W95
Scrappy is a simple but very handy notekeeper, with five preset 'documents' where text can be stored. This is great when, say, you're on-line and want to make notes about a site – URL, e-mail addresses, etc. The five documents can be saved like any other text editor and there is even a terrific 'recover' feature which takes a snapshot of all five text documents when the program closes, even if they aren't saved. To make the little program even more appealing, the author has added an alarm clock. Neat. But wait, there's more! Along the bottom are eight buttons, six of which are predefined program launchers (Windows Explorer, MS-DOS window, NotePad, MS Paint, Calculator, and your web browser if it is installed on the C:\ drive) plus another two buttons which can be user defined. Setting up those extra two buttons is a pain but when done, it gives you that much more flexibility with your desktop. We recommend that Scrappy go into the Startup menu so it is available all the time (by default it lives in the desktray next to the clock). We had some troubles with the download from the author's website but this might not be typical. If you have trouble downloading Scrappy, contact the author, Col Laughton, and he might even send you the zipped file by e-mail if you ask nicely. Scrappy looks good, works well, and is very functional. Well worth any trouble you might have to get, Scrappy is a 561kB download which you can access from: W95 Text Programs
HTML Paint Brush – W95
If you've ever wanted to get HTML colors but your fancy HTML editor doesn't offer that feature, or maybe you just don't want to load it just to change one color, HTML Paint Brush is just what you were looking for. Graphically showing what colors you select for page background, text, link and visited link, you can get your page looking just right (colorwise) and then click on the "Get Code" button to display the correct code for the colors you've selected. Do a simple copy and paste and you have the right colors inserted into your HTML page. HTML Paint Brush can also handle font colors too. With this program is another simple utility, Quick Reference, which displays the 16 standard colors and indicates their HTML color code so, again, you can just copy and paste into your document. We can see a real use for this little program – well programs – for anyone who wants to control the color on their webpages. Access this 256kB download from: W95 Internet Related
Nail It! – W95
There are many occasions when it would be handy to keep a particular program window 'on top' – like clocks, readme files, etc. Nail It! does just that, it allows you to keep a program's window 'on top' at all times. This utility lives in the desktray and is activated by the right mouse button and is a very handy tool. Access this 20kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities
The Viewer Pro – W31 (suitable W95)
There are quite a few image viewers available – and some even allow you to view other types of files (like text files). However, there is only one The Viewer Pro. Able to work with Kodak PhotoCD, JPG, BMP GIF, PNG,
PCX, TIF, CIT, MSD, EPS, TGA, PCT, WMF, WPG, MAC, AVI, WAV, MID, FLI, and FLC formats (whew!!!), it allows quite a degree of manipulation of files (depending on the filetype) and comes complete with effects filters, built-in ZIP file viewing and unzipping, TWAIN compliancy, audio CD player, FLI & FLC animation viewer – it even has a free screensaver. Our list of features is tiny compared to everything this program can do and we urge you to get a copy and have a look for yourself. Unfortunately, as a Win 3.1 program, it lacks many of the nice touches we have come to expect in Win95 programs (like right-click menus) but if raw power is your goal then The Viewer Pro will give you something to grunt about. With a download size of just 0.99MB, anyone who uses multimedia files should have a copy on their desktop. Get your copy from: W31 General Programs
Binary Boy Attachment Finder – W95
Binary Boy is an interesting program which will automatically download pictures, sounds and other Usenet file attachments matching a search criteria. Using normal Boolean expressions, AND, OR and NOT, to search and filter your requests, Binary Boy can start downloads immediately, at a preset time – it can even dial your ISP, download the binaries, and then log off. With global searches or specific searches in different newsgroups, this program demonstrates quite a degree of versatility in its operation. Advertiser supported, Binary Boy Attachment Finder has a professional look and feel with modern pop-up buttons, a clean interface and a pleasant color scheme. Some shrink-wrapped commercial products could look as good! If you are a newsgroup user you could find Binary Boy and essential utility in your toolbox.
