The Completely Free E-mail Update #5
Issued Aug 5, 1997
Welcome to the fifth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new freeware programs, including the ones listed below (in no particular order). Drop on in and take a look and then write back and tell us what you think.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing -- us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can ammend the CFS website.

CyberContact Light
Not so 'light', this versatile Contact and Information Manager is designed for use on the net. It can handle e-mail and web contacts, e-mail messages, activities, URL links, web pages, documents, files, and more. Its limitation is the number of database entries permitted, 2 x 100 only (the 'Pro' version doesn't have this limitation, but costs $US50!). Most Web users will find the 'Light' version more than adequate for their contact lists and should be pleased with the power of this excellent freebie. The download is a hefty 3.84MB and can be accessed from:

HiJaak Morph
Sophisticated morphing progam which allows you to change, say, your mother-in-law into a saint (truly!). Set up the links between the different sections of the picture, determine the number of frames you want, and bingo, an AVI file of one picture morphing into another. Access this fun 1.21MB download at:

Desktop Informant
Desktop Informant is an easy to use utility that displays detailed information for any file in Win 95. Simply hold the cursor over a file's icon for a moment and Desktop Informant will display all details available for that file in a 'bubble' format. This 1.46MB download can be accessed from:
W95 Desktop Utilities
Emptydoc
Clears the Documents folder on the Start menu every 60 seconds to preserve system resources and also assist with on-site security (so nobody knows which doc files you have been accessing). If this is what you need, get this 181kB download from:
W95 Windows Extras
Text Transmogrifier
An unusual name for an unusual product. Add color and some special effects your HTML code without Java or Javascript - just using normal HTML coding. Terrific if you want to highlight a portion of your text with one of the preset special effects - like changing the text to all uppercase (looks good if the first letter of each word is larger, and this program will do that too), make your text look like a ransom note (maybe you have a great need for a ransom note creator!), or do all sorts of weird things with color. Warning, overuse of this tool will make your web page look like a dog's breakfast and will bloat out your page size until only those with a cable modem will have the time to download it. Still, a handy program if used with caution. A 1.82MB download which can be accessed at:

SnadBoy's TopDesk
A much better and faster (though not as pretty) version of Microsoft's DeskMenu, with the ability to hide all desktop icons, leaving just the desktray ones. Goodbye DeskMenu, hello TopDesk! Go get this terrific 11kB download from:

Mah-Jongg
For those who haven't played this Chinese boardgame before, Mah-Jongg is a 'simple' tile-match game where you match pairs of tiles and they disappear from a pyramid-type layout. Mah-Jongg is one of those games you can play for hours on end, game after game (our fastest winning game is 3 minutes, but the average is nearer 10). This is the best version (free or otherwise) we have ever seen. It offers the traditional Chinese tileset and three others as well (medieval, US roadsigns and German roadsigns). It also offers the traditional (pyramid-shape) board layout plus five alternatives, each showing the degree of difficulty. Wow! On top of that you can choose a 'wallpaper' background or none, configure the sounds to suit yourself, etc etc etc. There is also a timer and a record of the current number of possible moves. This is terrific stuff - and the program is free!!! First time Mah-Jongg player or old hand, this will become one of your favorite time fillers. FREE WIN3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
Cheesy Invaders
Another 'blast from the past' from Cheesy Software with this DOS version of the old Space Invaders. The sign-off screen says it all: "Cheesy Software, Stupid games made great". Like all the other Cheesy Software games, the sound effects, etc are terrific and add a great deal to the play. For people with five minutes to kill, often, this 618kB download can be accessed from the Games section at:
W3.1 & DOS
WormGame
Simple Win 3.1 multi-level game with a few levels already unlocked and the remainder can be after e-mailing the author (one way to find out what people think about your game and how many are using it). This is the old 'worm game' where the worm travels around the screen 'eating' things and growing larger. If it touches anything but its 'food' (including itself) it dies. For the totally bored, this 43kB downlaod can be accessed from the Game section at:

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM OF THE WEEK
Net Vampire 2.0
We listed Net Vampire recently and it appeared in the first issue of the Update. Since then we have started to use it for nearly all our downloads (and we do heaps!), specially for the larger ones. It is an ftp/http download tool which can restart a lost download at the point where the downloading stopped, saving you the effort (and dollars) in having to re-start the download from scratch (dependant on support from the downloading site's server). We have noticed that the downloads seem faster than using a browser and the program will automatically keep trying if the connection is broken (for whatever reason). We found the easiest way to use Net Vampire is to copy the link location by placing the cursor on the download hypertext or image and clicking the right mouse button to bring up the menu - click on 'copy link location' or equivilent and then paste the address into the Net Vampire window. The download dialog box will then give you the option to start downloading immediately, start in 10 minutes (the default), or enter the time and date you want the download to commence on. You can queue your downloads (so they run one after the other) or all run at the same time (good for up to three downloads in our experience). It also has provision for proxy details, including the option to force the proxy to re-load the file into cache (very handy if a new version of the file has just come out and your proxy server still has the old one - with the same name - in its cache). Overall, Net Vampire is a dark horse for most users - its charms are not always apparant at first glance. If you intend to fill your hard drive with software from the Net, make Net Vampire your first download (assuming you already have a good virus checker). Access this 1MB download from:
