The Completely Free E-mail Update #7

Issued Aug 19, 1997

Welcome to the seventh edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing – us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

InfoLink Checker – freeware version

If you run a website with links to other sites (and we bet all WebMasters do) then dead links are a constant worry. What you need is a program which will check all those links for you while you sit back and have a coffee or chase up new sites to link to. InfoLink is for you. Fire it up, enter the URL of the page to be checked (or the location of that file on your hard drive), wait a few moments while it loads the page and creates a list of links to check, and then press the 'check' button (assuming you have an internet connection). Given a chance, it will check everything that is linked from your page – including the images you inserted to make the page look pretty. When it has finished checking out your links, you get two lists – unsuccessful links (often including information about where a site has been moved or if a temporary location is being used), and the successful links. Of course, like all link checkers, this one suffers from the problem of slow response indicating a broken link. However, we have had great success checking all the links on our sites (you might have noticed the logo and 'checked on' date on our pages – and some of them have over 100 separate links) so it does work and work well. If you're a WebMaster – even of a small personal homepage – you can't miss this one. Access this 1MB download from:

MidiPlus

A MIDI, WAV and AVI file player with a nicely designed CD-style interface with an impressive array of features. It will play individual files or you can create a playlist, having that playlist play at random or in order. The extensive Options dialog box has an impressive array of choices and even allows you to select or deselect the player as the registered file program for each of the filetypes. Impressive. Keep it on the desktop or as an icon in the desktray, this player has been heralded as the perfect replacement for Windows Mplayer.exe. Access this 988kB download from:

WildRen

Win95 often doesn't allow you to rename a file extension and this great little utility can do just that – individually or all files within a directory. Many of the files we upload include capitals in their names – something our ftp program must change so that all posted filenames are in lowercase (UNIX is case sensitive). Ten seconds with WildRen and all our filenames are now lowercase – easy! If you want to make backup copies of system files (logo.sys, etc) but Win95 just won't allow it don't worry. WildRen overrides the Win95 block and allows the files to be renamed. This is really handy if you're renaming multiple files. There are also buttons to make it easy to convert to lowercase (as we did), convert to uppercase, add characters, delete characters and replace characters. The only problem is that you can't work in multiple directories at the same time. One trick is to create a shortcut to the Windows\Send To folder so you can 'send' a file, or files, to WildRen This is one utility *every* Win95 user should have. Access this 144kB download from:

Link*Launch

Ever see those neat drop-down menus some sites have? Chances are they were created with Link*Launch. This nifty program will help you create a menu list with URL targets and then create the Javascript or CGI required to power it. Link*Launch is certainly an easy to use program and takes the hassle out of normally arduous script writing tasks. So if space is a problem on your webpage, or you just don't like those extensive menu buttons, try this freebie. Access this 1.1MB download from:

Simon32

Remember that old game called 'Simon' where you had to remember the sequence of lights and sounds? Here is a fabulous 32-bit version with some of the most unusual graphics we've seen. Instead of being in the normal rectangular window, Simon32 is not. We say no more, have a look yourselves. The game itself is quite simple and can be played with either one or two players and, as well as the non-rectangular look, the graphics are superb. You'll need a sound card with Wave audio and at least 64k colors for this 610kB download. Access it from:

RegEdit Extensions

If you hate delving into the bowels of the Win95 registry, then these extensions to RegEdit (a utility supplied with W95) will be a Godsend. The author says: "If you edit the same keys repeatedly, this is for you! A new combo box maintains the history of visited keys and allows quick navigation back to them. The keys are saved across sessions and available the next time you use the Registry Editor." You don't need us to tell you how helpful such a tool would be. Access this 214kB download from:

Alarm95

Do you need a computer-based alarm clock – for meetings, time reminders (like when to get off the Net, or when to go get a meal!), etc. You can set it to go off at the same time every day, or the same time and day each week (eg 10am every Monday), etc. It lives on the desktop as an icon and is therefore easily accessible. It is not a PIM, but is the next best thing for anyone who works to a clock. Definitely the best alarm clock-type program we have seen. (If you have a hassle downloading, contact us for extra assistance.) Access this 416kB download from:

Past, Present & Future

This is a calendar which presents the current month flanked by the previous and the next month (hence the title!). There are forward and back keys for years and months, meaning that you can skip back – or forward – one month or one year at the click of a button. As budding masochists we went back to 1111 (that's AD) and there was no sign that the program was 'bottoming out'. So if you have a hankering to know what day of the week it was when you were born, or just wish to check up on a date, Past, Present & Future just might be for you. Access this 17kB download from:

FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS

Roastem

Hands up if remember the QBasic game from MS-DOS 5.0 called 'Gorilla'. Here's another of the same type, this time using tanks and allowing quite a degree of variation. Sound card supported, this DOS game (like all the others in the Games section of the Win 3.1 & DOS page) runs fine under W95 in a DOS-box. Not exactly a brain draining game, Roastem is still a nice addition to your collection of Cheesy Software games (though lacking Cheesy's normally superb sound effects). QuickVerse KJV Bible

QuickVerse by parsons technology is one of the 'biggies' in commercial Bible software and they have offered the Authorized Version (King James version) of the Bible, with their terrific search engine, for free. Not only that, when you get to their site you are also offered the QuickVerse Library Manager and a number of electronic books (including Eastons Dictionary). The Bible itself is a reasonable download at 2.63MB, but the QuickVerse Library adds 3.62MB and the Eastons dictionary another 4.4MB. Still, a worthwhile system. Be patient with the download facilities at Parsons Technology (very slow) and if you have real hassles getting one or more of these programs through their system, drop us an e-mail and we might be able to suggest a shortcut. Access the QuickVerse Bible, and other add-ons, from:

VARIOUS FREEWARE RESOURCES

Bible Knowledge Accelerator

This is a terrific set of 'books' covering many aspects of Christian teaching, all presented in Windows' Help format. Maps and other images (of which there are many) are presented in color and there are links to additional information throughout the text. Download sizes vary up to about 600kB (most are less than 500kB) and they expand into 'books' of less than 1.44MB so they fit on to floppy disks. When we checked there were many books being upgraded and we intend to keep an eye on this site for future downloads. Access this site from: Various Freeware Resources

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM OF THE WEEK

SuperZip

One of the new breed of 'advertiser supported' freeware programs, SuperZip is very similar to WinZip except for one thing – WinZip costs you money, SuperZip is free! This great little program allows you to create an archive (compress a file or series of files into one smaller file using the ZIP 2.04g compression method), expand an archive, add or delete files to an existing archive, or view a file in an archive. While we use Stuffit Expander to expand the files we download (only because Stuffit creates a sub-directory and installs the unzipped files into it), SuperZip is our preferred method of creating 'zipped' files because it is just so easy. And yes, we also have commercial products too, we just find SuperZip to be easier to use and more convenient. SuperZip also comes with a terrific 'manual' and an easy to follow 'Quick Start Tutorial' guide to help you get up and running. You can access this 1.54MB download from:

FINALLY

You asked for it and you got it! We have added a 'New Additions' page to our site which you can access from the 'New' button on the top of each CFS page. Now you can keep track on what's been added since you last called (not all new programs are featured in this e-mail update). There's not much information on each program, basically just a name, operating system (DOS, Win 3.1 or Win95), download size and a link to the CFS page which lists the program. Please let us know it there's any other information you feel is essential (and if you know why there is a gap between the title and the start of the listing on the 'New Additions' page – we know there must be a reason, we just can't figure it out what the problem with the HTML code is!).

We would also ask that if you are still accessing CFS through Terrigal Net in Australia could you please change your bookmark to either OzEmail (Australia) or Tripod (US). Terrigal Net will not be available from the end of this month and we will be removing our files from its server.
