The Completely Free E-mail Update #12
Issued Sep 23, 1997
Welcome to the twelth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

Online Bible for Win95 AND Win 3.1
Still the most popular book in the world, the Bible is even better when you can conduct searches, add bookmarks, etc through your computer. The Online Bible (Win95 and Win 3.1 versions) takes this another step or two by offering a choice of languages and versions including the KJV (with Strongs numbers), ASV, Bible in Basic English, Darby, 1917 Jewish Publication Society, Webster Version (Noah Webster), Sagradas Escrituras Version Antigua Rev 1996 (Spanish), Louis Segond Version (French), Schlachter Bibel (German), La Nuova Diodati (Italian), 1934 Vietnamese Bible, Swahili New Testament (Swahili), Biblia Hebraica Morphological (Hebrew), Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (Hebrew), 1991 Byzantine Greek Text (Greek), and the 1550/1894 Textus Receptus (Greek). If that isn't enough, you can also get add-on English modules (Lexicon for Strong's, Treasury of Scripture Knowledge Notes, and Online Bible Topics - Bible dictionary). The setup program (in different languages too) is around 1MB and then you can download the Bibles and modules you want. For example, the KJV Bible (with Strong's numbers) is 2.6MB and the American Standard Version (ASV) is 1.6MB, while the Lexicon for Strong's is nearly 2MB and the Bible dictionary is around 4.9MB. The minimum download is approximately 2.7MB for the setup program (either version of Windows) and either the Darby or the ASV Bible. There is also a DOS version (see below). Othello
Fabulous version of this boardgame with sensational graphics! This is a boardgame where the aim is to trap the opponent's chips between yours (can be a computer or human opponent) with the person having the most number of chips on the board at the end being the winner. Great fun and it can even stretch the brain cells a tad or two. The graphics are sensational and really should at leat be viewed under high color (32k). Access this 237kB download from:

ImageSize
This handy little utility adds extra information to the Properties section of Explorer about GIF and BMP files. This extra information is presented in an extra dialog box and inlcudes image size (very handy for WebMasters to add image sizes to HTML pages to speed up loading those pages). It also give you information about the number of colors, the compression ratio of GIF files, etc, etc, etc. Mightn't sound like much but this is one utility which WebMasters will use, and use, and use. FREE WIN 3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
ViewHTML
This program is described by its author, Kevin Solway, as a "quickie HTML viewer and converter" which runs in DOS mode but still allows text, links, etc to be copied to the Windows Clipboard. The little program will allow you to view a HTML document, without graphics, in a DOS box and also to save the document without the HTML tags. Running the exe program (you can put a shortcut to it from the desktop) brings up a dialog box which allows you to select a file so you don't have to run totally in raw DOS (typing everything from the command line). The subsequent screen display allows you to display URLs and other 'hot spots', even different colors. Small, easy to use and easy to read, this handy little program is great for off-line viewing of HTML documents. Access this 72kB download from:

WinCode
WinCode is an essential program if you receive, or wish to send, binary files as ASCII text files for transmission via e-mail. A large binary file (anything from a picture to a full program) can be converetd into ASCII text (even to more than one ASCII file), sent as an e-mail, and then converted back into binary using this wonderful program. Attaching files (binary or ASCII text) to e-mails is not always successful as there are many systems and platforms being used today. WinCode beats those restrictions while allowing you to split up that binary file in a lot of smaller ASCII files which can then be sent via e-mail and decoded by the receiver. Compatible with all major encoding systems (UUencoding, MIME, BinHex, BTOA, BOO, etc even direct from the clipboard!), WinCode is a handy tool to have handy. Complete with an install and uninstall prgram, you can access this 998kB download from:

Online Bible for DOS
(For information about the Win 3.1 version see the Win95 section above.) Like the Windows versions, the DOS version of the Online Bible requires a setup program (370kB) and then at least one Bible. In DOS there are two Bibles available the KJV (with Strong's numbers) and the American Standard Version (ASV) which are 2.6MB and 1.4MB downloads respectively and a Lexicon with a 1.7MB download and the Revised Easton's Bible Dictionary with a 1.2MB download. If you are looking for a computer-based Bible then you would have to go a long way to better the range offered by the Online Bible. Access this terrific program from:

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM OF THE WEEK
Some people like to play action arcade games on their computer and others more sedate cardgames. Almost everyone we know who has tried Mah-Jongg has become addicted to this great boardgame. Play against the clock (and then cry when you find that some people can complete the game in around one and a half minutes while your best is five) or just take your time, Detlev Schmidtke's version of this classic Chinese tile game is the best free or not we've ever seen. The game is fully configurable and you can remove the background image (recommended by our staff), use alternative tilesets ('medieval' is the winner here) or even alternative layouts (we still tend to use the original 'pyramid' shape). One thing, you have to remember to ensure that your name is associated with the current game you're playing or someone else may get your fabulous score in the Hall Of Fame (never!). You play this game by removing tiles in matching pairs (there are four of each tile-matches on the board) until all 144 tiles are removed. You can only remove tiles with a side exposed. The more you play Mah-Jongg the more tricks you pick up (like trying to keep the original pyramid shape intact so you can maximise your opportunities to pair-up tiles) and the better your concentration becomes.
