The Completely Free E-mail Update #19

Issued Nov 11, 1997

Welcome to the nineteenth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing -- us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

X-Desktop – W95

X-Desktop is a unique program which can extend Windows beyond what is considered 'normal' use. It allows you to run up to six virtual desktops – each with its own set of open programs. This is a real boon for anyone who runs multiple programs on their desktop (like us!) as you can group your open programs so that related programs have their own virtual desktop. You can jump between virtual desktops as you now do between various open programs. The more you use X-Desktop the more valuable you'll find it. We often have a very cluttered desktop with 10 or more programs open at the same time. Now we can still have the same 10 open, but spread across multiple desktops so that each desktop is uncluttered. Open a virtual desktop through the icon on the desktray (the icon is a grid of six squares, with the active desktop represented by a yellow square and the other five grayed out) and you can select the desktop you want from the pop up menu. You can also use hotkeys to switch between desktops, and applications can be moved from one desktop to another. Programs opened through Windows Startup are common to all desktops. We cannot speak too highly of X-Desktop (don't mix it up with X-Setup, also reviewed this week) and would urge all Win95 to at least trial it for a week or two before deciding if it is really valuable to the way you work. We think you'll fall in love with it as we have. Go control your desktop and access this 1.22MB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Multivu – W95

This is a handy little program to view BMP, WMF, CUR, ICO, RLE & DIB image files. With a 'zoom in' and 'zoom out' facility, you can increase or decrease the size of an image enormously for easier viewing. Unfortunately it doesn't have scroll bars so when an image gets so large it goes off the screen – tough! One handy feature is that this is a MDI (Multiple Document Interface) program so you can open any number of images on your desktop and then tile them, cascade them, or just select each individual one from the Windows menu. With a tiny download of only 12kB and an unzipped size of still under 40kB, Multivu is a great tool for your desktop which will take up little hard disk space. Access it from: W95 General Programs

K/oS X-Setup – W95

X-Setup is a terrific little program which will allow you to take control of your Win95 desktop with more than 55 enhancements in 18 categories. With this 'hackers' delight you can get to and amend most of the hidden features of Win95 – like adding font smoothing without having MS Plus! installed, seeing what your Win95 CD Key number is (for people who have lost the CD – just drop the first five and the last five digits from the Windows Product-ID), controlling if you want to boot directly into Windows GUI or if you want to start with the C:\ prompt, etc. You can use the program to alter how Windows looks at memory (whether or not to unload DLLs after being used), show/edit or change the log off images – the choices seem endless! Best of all, this is a small 174kB download with polite installation and removing features. Access this W95 enhancement from: W95 Windows Extras

K/oS Explorer LaunchPad – W95

If you find yourself constantly accessing the same directory/subdirectory using Explorer then you will find Explorer LaunchPad exactly what the doctor ordered. Pre-configure LaunchPad with the directories you normally access and then you can either load it through the Start/Programs menu or, more easily, load it on startup and leave it minimized in the desktray for when you need it. the only 'problem' (if that is what it really is) with Explorer LaunchPad is that when Explorer is launched, you can only access the nominated directory and the sub-directories underneath it – you cannot access anything higher up the directory tree or on other disks (hard, floppy or virtual). With a small download of only 210kB, you can access Explorer LaunchPad from: W95 Desktop Utilities

To-Do List – W95

When you find that the things you have to do gets too much to leave to memory, To-Do List can become the repository of all those things you want (or have) to do. Order them by priority (three levels, each with its own color), by date or by description, or create a history of all completed tasks, this to-do list is one great little program. It's not a PIM which will do everything except make your early morning coffee, but a simple, highly effective listing of what you want (or need) to do. You can even print out a list of your tasks should you so desire (what did happen to that paper less office we keep hearing about?). But wait, there's more! You can pre-configure the desktray icon to include the day of the week for when just knowing the time just isn't enough – very handy for the morning after the night before ("What! It really can't be the 10th already!"). To-Do List is a handy little program which can help you organize yourself. Access this 201kB download from: W95 General Programs

flipTech Clear Cursors – W3.11 & W95

If you run Windows 3.11 and like the look of the fancy animated cursors and hourglasses available for W95 users then this one is for you. If you are a W95 user who doesn't like the cumbersome 'solid' white cursors and the anemic hourglass, wrap your teeth around these cool 'clear' (animated) cursors and hourglasses. There's a full set which must be individually added to Windows (under the Mouse section of the Control Panel in W95) but once they're added use the 'Save As' facility so you can swap and change as much as you like in the future. Oh yes, the clear cursor doesn't disappear on a black background either. Be the envy of all the nerds on your block and access this 6kB download from: W31 Windows Extras

Siggen Pro & 97 – W31 & W95

Ever wondered how some people get terrific looking text and graphics in their e-mail sigs? We're not talking about HTML e-mail, but normal ASCII e-mail. We'll tell you the secret (but don't tell anyone!) – they used Siggen Pro (Win 3.1) or Siggen97 (Win95) to generate their fancy text. With a choice of 18 character sets supplied – plus another further four packs of sets giving you a total of 63 character sets to choose from - you can create a variety of fancy e-mail sigs in raw ASCII. The Win 3.1 version (a 161kB download but which needs the VB3 runtime files) does not have a preview section like the Win95 version, and is slightly cutback in other features. It can be accessed from: W31 Internet Related
The Win95 version is a 430kB download (needs the VB5 runtime files) which can be accessed from: W95 Internet Related

KiLLCMOS32 – W95 (other versions available)

Ever needed to revert a PC's CMOS to the manufacturer's default? Ever forgotten your BIOS password (or have had the household's resident hacker fiddle with the BIOS and go away on camp for 10 days)? Then KiLLCMOS32 is for you. It corrupts in the BIOS in such a way that when you re-boot the computer the BIOS recognizes the error and gives you the option of reverting to the manufacturer's defaults (the BIOS stores basic information about the computer – size and type of drives, system time and date, etc – in the CMOS chip which is battery powered). In the process it will kill all the information added – like the password – and you will start again with a clean 'slate'. After you've used KiLLCMOS32 you will have to re-enter all your basic BIOS information – the number and type of floppy disks, etc. It works on all BIOSs. Use this program with caution. We recommend that you keep it on a floppy disk with the 'system' files on it (a bootable floppy) and well out of the way of the family's resident hacker. (The author's website also has DOS and Win 3.1 versions as well.) Access this handy 1MB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

flipTech Swap Monitor – W95

Swap Monitor is a small but very handy utility which monitors the memory Windows uses on your hard disk which will indicate real RAM requirements. Windows first uses available RAM memory, but if more is required will create virtual memory on the hard disk in the form of a swapfile. In our case the monitor informed us that 35MB was being used on our hard disk so we now know we have to increase the RAM in our test computer accordingly. SwapMon uses Win32 API calls to scan the true amount of memory being used rather than just look at the size of the WIN386.SWP file. One neat feature is the ability to be minimized into an icon on the desktray – very snazzy! Run the cursor over the icon and you see the current virtual memory usage without maximizing the program. Try SwapMon and you just might be surprised at your real RAM memory needs. Access this 15kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Web Prowler – W95

Microsoft's Internet Explorer is a cumbersome program which has many features which some people just don't need (or want). Web Prowler might just be the answer for those people. Based off IE3, Web Prowler is a leaner version which doesn't have such extras as an e-mail client, or a news reader. It is also a little light on when it comes to recording your favorites and, for some strange reason, when you try and open a file on your desktop it will pass the instruction over to your 'registered' (with the W95 registry) browser rather than open the page itself. Still, it seems to handle everything with ease – plays music, etc – and it renders pages the same as Communicator and IE4. We were impressed with the fact that you could open multiple URLs – like opening multiple windows in word processors, etc – so you could be monitoring a number of different sites at the one time on the same browser. Excellent! If you have a 'thing' about Mr Gates and you won't commit to paying for Communicator, then Web Prowler could certainly be the 'bees knees'. Smaller to download, Web Prowler is a good alternative to the 'big two' and has that multiple-window advantage. Access this 2.34MB download from: W95 Internet Related

WS_Watch – W31

WS_Watch is an Internet toolkit in one with graphical representations of many functions. It is pre-programmed with a number of major world sites which it pings to test not only whether the route is open , but how long it takes. It can also operate as a separate ping client, nslookup, whois, etc and is a simple if highly effective program. We have been using WS_Watch for quite a long time to test if a path is open (sometimes you can access your own ISP's server but not get out beyond it). From the same people who brought you WS_FTP (our preferred ftp client), WS_Watch appears now not to be supported and is not listed on their homepage. COMMENTS

Apologies to everyone for the comment on last week's e-mail update about '95Extra', a superb set of Win95 enhancements. We said there was no uninstall (which we thought a serious omission because when you setup 95Extra it automatically makes all the changes to your system – so bad luck if you didn't want them all). We wuz wrong! True, there is no conventional uninstall through Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (where we had looked), rather there is an entry under 'Programs' for 95Extra which is actually the uninstall feature for each of the enhancements. So you CAN uninstall individual enhancements (and therefore all of them, albeit one at a time) which makes the set that much more essential. If you didn't get yours, access this fabulous 209kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

FINALLY

If anyone is still geting more than one copy each week then please e-mail us with the details. We don't want to send out un-necessary e-mails, and you don't want to receive them.

We have been advised that our favorite Win95 game, Mah-Jongg, will become shareware with the release of version 6 in December. Unless we are advised to the contrary, the link to Mah-Jongg will be taken down at the end of November. If you would like to try one of the best board games available we would suggest that you jump in now and grab a copy of the current version which is freeware. Caution: Mah-Jongg is addictive! You can access this 2.48MB download from: W95 General Games
