The Completely Free E-mail Update #2

Issued Jul 15, 1997

Welcome to the second edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new freeware programs including the following (in no particular order). Drop on in and take a look and then write back and tell us what you think.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) all about sharing - us to you, you to us.

FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS

Explorer Notes

Adds a fifth column to the right pane of the Explorer screen to display a 255-character note or comment about the file. When you are using Explorer there is an extra feature added to the right mouse-button menu commands to allow you to add or edit a note. There is an icon in the desktray to help you find or prune a note, and from which you can access the 'help' menu. It is a 378kB download from:

W95 Windows Extras

InCtrl3

Not all programs have well-behaved un-install routines. InCtrl3 watches the installation process and saves a report of all system changes made during installation so you can reverse the process later. Never be caught with a directory full of un-needed DLLs again. There is also a 16-bit version for Windows 3.1 users. This is a 238kB download which you can access from:

W95 General Programs

FileGrab

Rather than copy a files' contents, FileGrab creates a usable list of filenames which can be copied to the clipboard, printed, inserted into documents, etc. With this very handy utility you can drag 'n drop from Explorer into the open FileGrab window. More useful than you might imagine, this is a 147kB download which can be accessed from:

W95 Desktop Utilities

Country Codes

This terrific little utility gives you the international country abbreviations you see all the time on the net. You might know that the 'UK' suffix on a URL means that it comes from the United Kingdom, but how about ZA, where is that from? (If you said Zaire go to the bottom of the class, it's South Africa.) This handy utility is a tiny 20k download which you can access from:

FREE WIN3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS

PagePlus Intro

This fabulous desktop publishing tool is 'little brother' to Serif's Page Plus 3.0. This little beauty is an extremely powerful DTP program which supports both free text and text frames. Images can be added without first having to create a frame, a feature many of the $1,000 DTP programs don't have!. We have used PagePlus Intro (all four versions released to-date) and also PagePlus 2.0 and 3.0, and would recommend either the 'intro' version or the full version of 3.0 to anyone who has a use for DTP. We still can't believe it is free! Access this 1.28MB download from:

W3.1 & DOS

ARJ Archiver

ARJ has been around for quite a few years now and is an excellent DOS file archiver. Version 2.50 (listed as shareware but free for private use) has been released and version 2.55c is available in beta. 2.55c includes long filename support for Win95 users and hosts of other goodies. Make up a batch file and use it to backup your datafiles (if you put all your data into the one set of directories you can easily backup that directory and the sub directories under it). A 343kB download which you can access from:

W3.1 & DOS

Checkers

Enjoy the checkers board game (also known as 'draughts') with this excellent 3D version. Play against another human or against the computer (which *can* be beaten!). With a 131kB download, you'll soon be up and playing. Get it from the 'Games' section:

W3.1 & DOS

DrawPlus Intro

Like PagePlus Intro (above), DrawPlus Intro is a 'little brother' product. This drawing program uses bezier curves and offers a wide choice of image control (including drop shadow). While it operates as an OLE client, it only works in WMF format which is somewhat restrictive for Internet use. Still, you can always cut and paste into a program like LViewPro16 and then save in GIF or JPG format. A 947kB download which can be accessed at:

W3.1 & DOS

InCtrl3

It isn't always easy to un-install a Win3.1 program. InCtrl2 ('in control') watches the installation process and saves a report of all system changes made during installation so you can reverse the process later. More info in the Win95 section above. This is a 211kB download which you can access from:

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM(S) OF THE WEEK

This week we look at two HTML editors - Arachnophilia and HomeSite. Both have strengths and weaknesses, and while we were hoping to have pensioned off one, we find that we are still using both. Arachnophilia has the advantage over HomeSite when it comes to opening multiple documents (you can open as many as your memory allows) while HomeSite limits you to just one page. This makes it awkward when you are cutting and pasting across several pages (something which we do constantly). On the other hand, HomeSite has a better 'front end' and also has the advantage of adding the size attribute when you insert images. So which is best? Both! Maybe, like us, you'll find both editors indispensible. Both can be accessed from the Internet Related section of Win 95.

FINALLY

Please note: 'Map This' the image map constructor, is not now supported and the company has released a shareware version. However, the last freeware version can still be downloaded directly from our US server, Tripod.com. 'Map This' can be found on our Win 3.1 page and also on our Win95 section under 'Internet Related'.
