The Completely Free E-mail Update #20
Issued Nov 19, 1997
Welcome to the twentieth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.
COMMENT FROM THE EDITOR
This week the e-mail update is a little smaller than normal and there won't be one next week. Sorry. This is due to unexpected outside work pressures which is sapping all of my time. There could also be occasions between now and Christmas where a week is missed this is due to the same reason (and I am not getting more than 24 hours warning for this extra workload so it is hard to plan ahead). Things should settle back down again after Christmas. Thank you for understanding.
COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS
Free Brush W31
Free Brush is an unusual 'paint' program with some interesting features. It uses pictures or portions of pictures as the brush so you can then paint that image onto your 'canvas'. When you save the image you get the option of retaining the image size at 640 x 600 or reducing it back to something smaller. The images used as 'brushes' can be imported in one of a number of common image formats BMP, DIB, GIF, JIF, JPG, PCX, PNG, RLE, TGA, TIF, WMF and WPG and when loaded can be manipulated in a large number of ways (negative, flip, blur, double blur, random colors, edge effect, and a choice of an assortment of special effects). Images can be cropped so that your brush is only a small part of your overall picture. Imported images larger than 140 x 100 will be reduced to that size, though slider controls allow you to get the picture back into the proper perspective, albeit with the longer side at the maximum allowed. When finished you can print your masterpiece or save it as a BMP file. Generally this is a fine 'fun' graphics program with features not found on expensive commercial drawing programs. Needs VB3 runtime files, a 486 or better with 8MB RAM and 32k colors. Very suitable for W95. Access this 644kB download from: W31 General Programs
Gif Cleaner W95
GIF images quite often have unwanted information contained within them which bloat out their size. Some shareware GIF animators even insert comments when the program isn't registered. Gif Cleaner will remove those unwanted comments and application extension structures to save you from 100 bytes to 1kB in GIF size which means that your page will load faster. Symbol Selector W31
Handy utility to view and copy symbols from fonts. With Symbol Selector you can view the symbols much larger than you can through Character Map (the viewing size can be changed enormously up to about 120 points) and you have the option of copying to the Clipboard in RTF (Rich Text Format) or WMF (Windows MetaFile). The keystroke to access the symbol is listed, whether it be a normal keyboard character or, for extended characters, the Alt+ number. When you start the program it only shows what it considers to be symbol fonts but there is an option to view all fonts so you aren't limited to just a few. Better than Microsoft's Character Map (at least you can see symbols clearly with Symbol Selector!), this is a handy utility for both Win 3.1 and Win95 users. Windows Phonebook 95 W95
There are many contact list programs around but this is definitely one of the better ones. Complete with automatic dialing, email and fax support, Windows Phonebook 96 is a great electronic phonebook which is easy to use. This modern-looking program (it features the new-look buttons) has a built-in search faclity and will even try and second-guess you when you start typing in a search string. The best feature of Windows Phonebook 95 is that it is so easy to use and so unobtrusive a bit like pulling on a pair of well-worn shoes. If you need a contact list/phonebook (and who doesn't?) then go grab this 187kB download from: W95 General Programs
Today W95
Today is an event reminder which is both simple yet highly effective. Fully configurable, you can include sounds to notify you of events, a 'look ahead' feature to notify you of upcoming events, and enjoy a customizable quote-of-the-day (supplied quotes are from the TV shows, Star Trek and Blade Runner). Today even has a biorythm feature for people who organize their 'bad hair days' to suit specific 'bio' patterns. This is a neat program with both practical and a fun features. EditHTML W95
Programs like this one prove that you don't have to be a 10MB download to be good. EditHTML is a simple registry file which adds an 'edit' facility when you right click on a HTML file in Explorer. This allows you edit the source code with WordPad (just remember to save as DOS ASCII text and not Word 6.0 text). It also adds an edit button to MS IE3 (though not to Navigator). Installation is easy just double click on the .REG file which is part of the download and everything is done for you in less than a second and the edit function is available immediately. To uninstall, right click on the uninstall.inf file and select 'install'. Soooo easy! Best part is the download size less than 2kB. You can access this handy utility from: W95 Internet Related
COMMENTS
When 'signing up' for the Completely Free E-mail Update, Peter said: "Please ensure my e-mail address does not fall into the hands of spammers. There is a difference between a news letter and junk mail". Peter, we agree completely! Our subscriber list is completely private and it will NOT be sold or lent to anyone else and we ONLY use it to send out the weekly update we do not even use it to send out any additional material ourselves.
