The Completely Free E-mail Update #21

Issued December 2, 1997

Welcome to the twenty-first edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past two weeks we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing – us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

IE4 PowerToys – W95 (needs IE4)

Microsoft has produced seven 'power toys' for Internet Explorer 4. Unsupported, these 'toys' can do the following: "Open Frame in New Window" which means that you can break free of a frame and view a page on its own; "Quick Search" which allows you to do faster searches from the URL Location Address by typing an abbreviation for the search engine and then your search string (eg if you wanted to search for 'freeware' you would type 'av freeware' to search through the Alta Vista search engine); "Zoom In/Zoom Out" on an image; "Image Toggler" so you can easily turn off graphics for faster speed; "Text Highlighter" for highlighting text in long documents; "Web Search" so you can right-click on a word on the webpage, select 'Web Search', and it will load that word into the default (through Microsoft) search engine; and "Links List" which lists all the links on a page in a new window. If you are using MS IE4 then these power toys are essential! Access this 234kB download from: W95 Internet Related

Servant Salamander – W95

This is a file/directory manager which is similar to Norton Commander. Files and directories are presented in two viewing windows which can be controlled separately (different parts of the same drive, or different drives). You can move or copy files across the two viewing windows, create directories, delete directories and files, drag 'n drop, etc. All very sophisticated, and also very handy. Servant Salamander also includes a file viewer which will handles files up to 2GB with ASCII text and Hex modes. All functions have hotkeys (hooray – mouse control is sooo slooow) and long file names are supported (well, it IS a Win95 program!). Access this 185kB download from: W95 Windows Extras

Say The Time – W95

In a word, it does! Say The Time is an icon which lives in the desktray to the right of the clock. Move the mouse cursor over it and you get the date appear, left click the icon and a very sweet female voice says the current time. Right click on the icon and you get the standard dialog box (Properties, About and Exit) and the Properties dialog box gives you the option to have the time automatically said (with or without a chime or other sound) every 5, 10, 15, 30 or 60 minutes. This is super cool! There is also a built-in alarm feature to let you know about preprogrammed events – each of which can have its own sound. Installation is a simple right click on the Saytime.inf file (and choose 'Install') and it uninstalls through the Add/Remove programs dialog box. Say the Time requires VB40032.DLL and is 'Postcardware' (you should send the author a postcard if you continue to use it). Access this terrific, if a little large, 1.09MB file from: W95 Desktop Utilities

CheckWeb – W95

CheckWeb is a checker for the HTML links on your webpages. The interface is simple but effective and the program generates a report on completion. There are no fancy help screens, no bells and whistles, just a good, easy-to-use program which does exactly what it's supposed to without requiring a massive amount of hard disk space. TNT Solitaire – W95

TNT Solitaire is a great cardgame which is similar to Golf. Help, unfortunately, is only available on-line but after some fiddling we soon found out the gameplay and rules and then couldn't put it down – very addictive. In this game you must remove the cards from the table, but you can only take cards which are numerically adjacent to the one in the stack (a seven can get a six or an eight – suits are not taken into account). With the new card in the stack you can build off that. When you can't go anymore then you turn over another card, etc until you have none left. To add to this game you have a timer which can be adjusted from Slow, through Insane to ToniK. The card faces are excellent thanks to the use of qcard32.dll which was a separate download when we got it but we understand is now included in the package. If you like Solitaire-type cardgames you will go a long way before bettering this one! Access this 1.83MB download from: W95 General Games

Phantom – W95

Phantom is a program which lives as a desktray icon and checks your mail at preset intervals. What makes Phantom stand out from the crowd of e-mail checkers is that it can be configured to delete spam mail at your ISP's mailbox without even downloading it. Phantom can also be set to load your regular e-mail client (Eudora, etc) whenever a certain e-mail letter arrives and then display that urgent message. Normally it just monitors what mail you have and when you place the cursor over the Phantom icon the number of letters waiting for downloading is shown. It can also play a sound when mail arrives. Phantom is not a very small download for an e-mail checker at 2.28MB but you can reduce that to 1.6MB if you already have the file msvbvm50.dll in your Windows\System directory (most people will already have it). Phantom is an exceptional e-mail checker and you can access this great program from: W95 Internet Related

Registry Saver – W95

This handy little utility backs up your Win95 Registry at preset intervals. When used for the first time you get a simple dialog box where you put a number. The number 2 indicates that Registry Saver will backup your Registry every second time that your computer boots up, 5 every fifth time, etc. However, Registry Saver has two drawbacks – you only get one chance to set the frequency of backup and you can't uninstall the program. However, RegSaverOptions to the rescue. This is a separate 104kB download (the main program is a 90kB download) from the same site at Registry Saver (Dohhh!) but which gives you the option to.. you guessed it, change the frequency of when the registry is saved and to uninstall the Registry Saver. Access both these files from: W95 Windows Extras

Bible4 – W31

Bible4 is a King James version (KJV) Bible with a great search engine, over 12,000 topics listed (Nave's Topics & Torry's Topics), Easton's Bible Dictionary, Hitchcock's Bible Names, Matthew Henry's Commentary, bookmark feature, maps, parables, etc, etc, etc. Now if it only made coffee... Seriously, if you want a great KJV Bible and you want everything included (except coffee making facilities!) then this one is for you. Not a small download at 11.3MB (wish they'd split it up into different programs for downloading) but still well worth the time and effort to get. Needs 24 meg of hard disk space and at least 8 meg of RAM. It also works very well under Win95 too. Access this little (?) beauty from: W31 General Programs

Advanced Task Manager – W3.1 (& W95!)

Advanced Task Manager is one of those utilities you just can't live without – and you often don't even know you need it! While Windows allows you to switch between programs – and W95 even allows you to shutdown some tasks – this little utility gives you near total control. Check the option that allows you to see 'invisible' tasks and you suddenly can control so much more of your desktop. Of course, you must be careful not to close something essential to Windows (at the worst case, you just have to re-boot) but being able to access and close those hidden or background programs is bliss. But wait, there's more! Advanced Task Manager can also be used to launch programs, shutdown or restart Windows, or re-boot the system. It also gives you information on system resources and global memory plus the amount of free space on the first two hard disks (OK if you only have one or two - we run four hard disks!). Absolutely essential for Win 3.1 users, and thoroughly recommended for W95 users, you can access this 118kB download from: W31 Windows Extras

F-Secure Desktop – W95 (W3.1 also available)

Ever need to protect valuable files from prying eyes? Ever worry about someone being able to undelete your deleted files? F-Secure Desktop could be the answer for your prayers. This terrific program allows you to encrypt both files and directories with a very secure key (choose it by moving your mouse in a random pattern over a panel – you won't know what numbers you'll be selecting but at least you'll know that no two would be the same). You then select a 'passphrase' (better security than a password) which you can change as often as you like. F-Secure Desktop adds a right-click menu to Windows Explorer so you can select the files you want to encrypt or securely delete. F-Secure also adds an icon to Control Panel which allows you to change some options (including 'passphrase') and gives you access to the 'Web Club' which is available to all users. This program works either on a stand-alone PC or on a LAN. F-Secure Desktop offers much more than we could put here and we suggest that if it interests you then you visit their website for more information. The W95 version is a 1.51MB download and there is also a Win 3.1 version from the same site which is a 1.2MB download (only the W95 version is listed on the CFS pages). Access this great encryption program – or just more information about it – from: W95 General Programs

Showcalc – W95

Showcalc is a basic desktop calculator with one important feature – it has a 'tape' window (like a printer-calculator) so you can check your figures. This is essential for any important calculation and for any calculation which requires the input of more than just a couple of figures. Once you've carried out your calculation – and checked that all your figures were accurate – you can print off a copy of it, or copy and paste it into another program. You don't need to be Einstein to appreciate the value of a calculator like this one. It has nice features in that you can choose to include up to 14 decimal places, up to six decimal places, or only two (for currency). There is also an option to change the 'tape window' font (now who would want to present their calculations in Olde Englishe???). Showcalc gets a Big Smiley from the team at CFS who are forever getting their sums wrong. Access this 693kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

Lava Lamp – W95

And now for something completely useless! Lava Lamp is a desktray icon. Basically it does nothing except animate (you can adjust the speed) and is colored (you can change the color). It has no redeeming features, unless you count the animated spectacle (boring!). To make matters worse, it is a 1.6MB download!!! We wasted our download on it, now you can do the same. (It might be handy if you have an excess of RAM and want to use up some of it – better still, send your spare RAM to us, we're about 64 meg short for our test machine.) If you are desperate to have the last thing in desktop fashion (and we really DO mean the last thing), then you can access this, er, program from: W95 Desktop Utilities

COMMENTS

Sorry about no e-mail update last week – unfortunately we might miss another one before Christmas due to outside work pressures. Please bear with us. We are trying to produce larger e-mail updates to compensate :)

UPDATES

Arachnophilia, the souce-code HTML editor we choose to use, has had a minor update to version 3.4 (build 3758) which fixes some of the problems associated with the last upgrade (very slow scrolling as tags were being colored). Arachnophilia is just going from strength to strength with this upgrade. Access the Arachnoid site from: W95 Internet Related
