The Completely Free E-mail Update #22

Issued December 9, 1997

Welcome to the twenty-second edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added many new programs, including the ones listed below.

The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.

We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing – us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.

COMPLETELY FREE PROGRAMS

WebTurbo – W95

WebTurbo is a tool to speedup your web access by up to 10 times. Available in two versions, for Netscape and for MS Internet Explorer, WebTurbo gives you the opportunity to view the details a page without actually placing that page in the main window. There is an option to view up to 10 previews and the program has a built-in search facility which uses the main public search engines (like Alta Vista, etc). We won't comment on the claims that it will speedup web access by up to 10 times (the key words being 'up to') as the speed of the web varies from minute to minute and we had no way of checking the claims. If you want to try WebTurbo you can access the 1.56MB download for the Netscape version, and the 1.71MB version for the MS IE version, from: W95 Internet Related

Clarion – W95

Clarion is a very good midi/wav player which also handles audio CDs. It have some nice little features like a CD eject button, quick access to the W95 volume control, an optional floating audio bar (you can close the main program after setting up your playlist but still access the floating controls), etc. If you're looking for a replacement midi/CD player then you would do well to check out this one. Start Menu Cleaner – W95

The Windows Start menu can get clogged with links to long dead programs (not all are good as removing all the hooks when you uninstall). Start Menu Cleaner is a simple utility which can remove those dead links and also any empty directories. It works really well, is fast and you can optionally include it in the Windows Startup menu so it can do it's job every time Windows is started. Don't let your W95 Start menu get clogged with dead links by grabbing this miserly 28kB download. Access it from: W95 Desktop Utilities

DISKdata – W95

Excellent program that analyses disk space utilization and then presents the results in report form or pie chart. Check all drives and folders and get a detailed report on them which can be printed. It's Explorer-like interface makes it a breeze to use – just click on the drive/folder you want analysed and in no time you've got a bucketful of information. Access this handy 364kB download from: W95 Desktop Utilities

HT Create – W95 ( W31 version also available)

HT Create is a source-code HTML editor which supports over 70 tags, including ones for HTML 2, HTML3.2, Netscape and Internet Explorer. It has a macro feature and a very handy customizable toolbar. It also supports frames, tables, forms, object embedding and Java. Unfortunately it doesn't color the tags as do most modern source-code editors (and the better ones like Arachnophilia also check the validity of the existing code when applying the colorization). We have only listed the W95 version but there is also a Win 3.1 version as well (both about the same size download at 1.44MB). Access both versions from: W95 Internet Related

Hierophant – W31

Hierophant is a scrambled puzzle where you must move the pieces around to match the symbol. Like a cross between a 2D Rubik's cube and the old 15-puzzle, Hierophant challenges the brain cells but without posing a time restraint. In its basic form the puzzle has a 3 x 3 grid but it can be changed to any combination up to 5 x 5 and there are plenty (repeat, plenty!) of puzzles to keep you going for a long, long time. Very playable under W95, Hierophant (which is apparently Greek for "interpreter of ancient mysteries") is a great addition to your collection of puzzles – very handy when you want to kill a few minutes but don't want to fire up a huge game. Access this 284kB download from: W31 General Games

WebArchitect – W95

WebArchitect is another HTML source-code editor. It features Wizards to create code for forms, tables, ActiveX and homepages. A good clean appearance with a side bar Explorer-like quick open file menu, you can load a number of files at one time but they are not easy to get to, which is a shame. WebArchitect also lacks tag colorization, which is almost mandatory these days and the image insertion dialog box allows for image size but doesn't add the size itself. Still, the interface is excellent and anyone with a smattering of HTML coding will soon have this baby flying. If you want an English Help file you have to download it separately (31kB), which is recommended. Access this 1.72MB download from: W95 Internet Related

Vizual Einstein 32 – W95

Vizual Einstein is a note outliner, and a database for ideas and concepts. As an assistant to programmers, students, writers and others requiring a well thought out plan before tackling a project, Vizual Einstein 32 is designed to help create an outline for that project. Lacking any form of Help file (just fly-over button help and hints at the bottom of the screen), much of Vizual Einstein's power is accessed through right-clicking on headings, notes, etc. Vizual Einstein is Net aware and has it's own in-built browser which can even handle animated GIFs and music! A large download at 4.3MB, Vizual Einstein 32 is well worth getting if you have a need for such an outliner. Access it from: W95 Text Programs

The Thinking Man's Thesaurus – W31

This is another handy freeware program from Kevin Solway. This stand-alone thesaurus is also a spell checker, and has three separate windows – a 'Used in the sense of' window, a 'Related words' window and a 'Similarly spelled words' window. If you want to find out synonyms and/or antonyms this program is exactly what you need. Find the word you need and use the Windows' clipboard to copy and paste it into your text-based program. The Thinking Man's Thesaurus also has a front end for the WebWord dictionary/thesaurus (see also W31 General Programs). access this 790kB download from: W31 General Programs

Computer Tutor For Windows 95 –W95

Windows 95 confusing you? Want to find out more about WinWord, Excel, Publisher, Norton Anti-virus, Netscape (v2.02!), WinZip, etc? Then go grab this 6.62MB download (98% of the download comprises graphics) and spend a happy day or two checking through the 12 lessons (and two appendixes) on all those subjects above and then some. Lots of good graphics illustrate the points that the author is making with dialog boxes, etc so you can get a real feel for the programs you are learning. Many of the tutorials offer practice lessons where you have to, say, create a dial-up connection. If you are struggling with Win95 (put down your hand, Mr Gates) and want more information about some of the major Win95 programs (specially with an Internet bias) you are likely to come across, this is just for you. COMMENTS

Please advise if you are having trouble accessing the Microsoft 'Power Toys' on the W95 Windows Extras page using IE4. We have been getting reports of strange behavior (404 messages, etc) which have not been happening with Netscape 4. The link is correct and the only solution we know is to copy the URL into your clipboard (right click on the link and select "Copy Shortcut") and then highlight the address in the 'Address' window in IE4 and paste the URL by holding down the Control key while pressing the v key (Ctrl-V). If you then press the Enter button you should go to the right address. Awkward, and strange!

If you enjoy the Completely Free Software site please don't feel shy about letting others know.

APOLOGY

When reviewing TNT Solitaire last week we neglected to mention that there were other games in the 'set'. If you downloaded it last week and thought that there was only one game (as we did), go to the Game menu and then down to Select – from that point there are three games mentioned: Fun21; FunTowers; and FunSquares. FunSquares doesn't really do anything (yet!) but Fun21 and FunTowers (the one we reviewed) are functional. The author has written and said that he will be including a Help file with the next version so you don't have to be on-line to get help. If you missed getting it last week, it is double the value (well, two games ARE better than one!) this week. Access this 1.93MB download from: W95 General Games
