The Completely Free E-mail Update #3
Issued Jul 22, 1997
Welcome to the third edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new freeware programs, including the offerings listed below (in no particular order). Drop on in and take a look and then write back and tell us what you think.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing us to you, you to us.
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
Explorer Notes
Adds a fifth column to the right pane of the Explorer screen to display a 255-character note or comment about the file. When you are using Explorer there is an extra feature added to the right mouse-button menu commands to allow you to add or edit a note. There is an icon in the desktray to help you find or prune a note, and from which you can access the 'help' menu. It is a 378kB download from:
W95 Windows Extras
PEsx
Another nifty little Windows 95 enhancement, PEsx is a shell extension which checks DLL and application dependencies so you can clear your hard disk of duplicated files and see just what is dependant on what. A tiny 30kB download which can be accessed from:
W95 Windows Extras
BigBin
Normally when you delete a file under Win95 it goes to the Recycle Bin where it can be undeleted later with ease. However, files deleted in a DOS box disappear into cyberspace and cannot be recovered if at all without using an 'undelete' utility. BigBin sends files deleted under DOS to the Recycle Bin. This 41kB download is great insurance for that one in a hundred time when you need to 'undelete' them. Don't be caught short without BigBin which can be accessed at:
W95 Windows Extras
IconEdit
Supurb icon editor from PC Magazine which has numerous features to enhance its usability. For instance, the main screen features an 800% view of the icon (or the blank icon screen) plus a normal-sized viewing screen so you can see what you're doing 'in real time', and allows you to re-size icons. This bit-map editor is a 149kB download which can be accessed from:
W95 General Programs
DirNow!
Saves searching through a large hard drive to find a particular directory. Start typing a directory (folder) name in the DirNow! box and it brings up a list of directories which start with those letters. Click on the one you want and it will launch Explorer and go there. What a little ripper! With a 38kB download, you can access this program through:
W95 Windows Extras
Revelation
Win95 might remember your password, but do you? Now you can access that long-forgotten password hidden under that daunting row of asterisks with SnadBoy's Revelation. With it's professional installation, this looks more like a $30+ shareware program than a free one but free it is! With a 1.26MB download, access revelation through:
W95 General Programs
FREE WIN3.1 & DOS PROGRAMS
Backgammon
Play the ancient dice game of Backgammon against the computer or a human foe with this 150kB download. Haven't played before? No worries, this little beauty even has the rules of the game and some strategy tips. Color 3D board enhances the play and the whole program is well presented. Access your copy through:
W3.1 & DOS
INTERNET FREEBIES
If you would like a banner for your website then you can use The Banner Generator to create a unique banner for you while you wait. Caution, there are so many choices of style and color that you could spend quite some time just experimenting with different looks before hitting on the one which you like. You can access this excellent free service from:

HIGHLIGHTED WIN95 PROGRAM OF THE WEEK
One of the handiest Win95 programs we have used is Yankee Clipper. This amazing little utility (43kB download) sits quietly in the desktray and makes a note of everything which goes into your clipboard. It can be configured to hold either the last 20 or the last 50 entries and is a real boon to anyone who does a lot of cutting and pasting. Exceptionally handy if you want to copy a number of separate items from one file and place them (one at a time) in an another. We use it dozens of times every day as we cut and paste, or copy and paste, bits and pieces between files. We even use it when e-mailing if there's a juicy bit of information (or a good joke) we want to share with a few friends. Load Yankee Clipper from the StartUp menu (place a shortcut in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp) so it will load automatically on boot-up, and you will be amazed (as were we) just how often you use it. Access it through:

FINALLY
We'd like to thank everyone who has told us where or how they discovered the Completely Free Software site. That sort of feedback is invaluable to assist in improving site promotion. By the way, to date most people reported finding this site through a search engine and Infoseek was top of the list of search engines mentioned. Just thought you'd like to know.
