Tiny Soldiers: World War 2 v1.10 WinXP/Vista/7
Tiny Soldiers: World War 2 is a 2D war game where you command a group of American soldiers who are fighting the Nazis. In this game you must infiltrate behind enemy lines and capture or destroy enemy camps, bridges, bunkers, etc. Opposing you are crack German soldiers with jeeps (?), tanks, etc. This is a fun little game played on a broad canvas where your soldiers, led by a Rambo-style leader (yep, that's you), must take on the might of the Nazi war machine. Apart from some questionable historical aspects (those German "jeeps" for one), Tiny Soldiers: World War 2 is a fun way to kill a few enemy soldiers without suffering more than an occasional embarrassing low score. It does display some cartoonish blood and gore, but there is an option on the menu page to reduce the blood and gore to a "low" level rather than the default "high" level. More suitable for someone who slightly older (it is considered to be a PG13 game but most teenagers probably wouldn't like it), Tiny Soldiers: World War 2 is a fun way to spend and hour or so. We loved. Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Access this 8.01MB download from: WinXP General Games
Free PC Inventory v1.6 Win98/ME/XP/Vista/7
Free PC Inventory is a small utility that displays extensive System information, plus information about installed software and running processes. It can copy any information to the Windows' Clipboard for pasting into other programs, it is fully portable (no installation, runs from USB drive, CD-ROM or floppy disk), and more. This is a simple but effective way to get important information about your computer what software is installed, what processes are running, and everything you need to know about your computer system (hardware and software). Free PC Inventory even gives you the CD key used to activate Windows, and lots more besides. One good use for this little program is to find out what processes are running so you can check that all are legitimate and there isn't any malware (malicious software) running. It can be used to track down and block those errant processes. Because Free PC Inventory requires no installation, and writes nothing to the computer, it can be run from any portable media (even CD-ROMs). If you need to know what "under the hood" with your computer then Free PC Inventory is a "must have". Grab a copy now! Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95. Access this 0.98MB download from: Win98 Desktop Utilities
Softi FreeOCR v2.6 WinXP/Vista/7
Softi FreeOCR is an OCR (optical character recognition) tool that recognizes characters (text) from scanned printed text, PDF files or images. It features accurate conversion using the Tesseract PDF OCR engine, supports 5 image formats (TIF, BMP, GIF, JPG & PNG), it can export OCR text to Word, save as a TXT file, copy it to the Windows' Clipboard, and more. This is one of the best OCR programs we have seen. As long as the image to be "read" is large enough, it does a remarkably accurate conversion of the text into a format that can be re-used or edited. When scanning a document the author says that the minimum for a relatively accurate rendition is 200 DPI, though 300 DPI is recommended. We also noticed that if we tried to process an image with smaller text (say, 10 point text at fullsize) the rendition was quite poor and the document required considerable editing to render it accurately. Ideally the text size should be about 30 point achieved when 10 point text is scanned at 300 DPI. We were most impressed with Softi FreeOCR. When the input text size is large enough, there is a very small number of errors which need to be manually corrected. If you need an OCR program, Softi FreeOCR should be very high on your list. We loved! Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Get this 4.38MB download from: WinXP Text Programs
Christmas Candles v1.0 Win9x/ME/XP/Vista/7
Christmas Candles is a Christmas-themed screensaver with a traditional Winter Wonderland look. It features 3 separate animated scenes (approx 1 minute to cycle through), beautiful background music ("We Wish You a Merry Christmas"), extra screensaver settings, and more. This is a nice, if a little schmaltzy, screensaver which follows the full Winter Wonderland experience Santa, deers, snowman, forest characters, etc. The screensaver cycles through the three separate Flash animations in about one minute, so you aren't stuck watching a single long scene. The music is traditional, and pleasant, and the screensaver is one you will probably want to use during the festive season and in the lead up. We would have liked to have seen a few more scenes to fill out the screensaver so that it lasted more than one minute before repeating. If you are into the traditional white Christmas, Christmas Candles is a nice way to add some Christmas spirit to your computer. Worth checking out. Free YouTube Utility v2.02 WinXP/Vista/7
Free YouTube Utility is a program that lets you search, download and convert YouTube videos. It features support for 12 video formats (iPod, MP4, FLV, 3GP, MPG, AVI, iPhone, WMV, MOV, etc) & 4 audio formats (MP3, WAV, WMA & AAC), it has a drop box, there is IE context menu support, built-in thumbnail previewer, a good Helpfile, and more. This is an excellent way to find, download and convert YouTube video files and you don't even need your Web browser! Enter your search keywords into Free YouTube Utility and it will find about 100 relevant YouTube videos that match those keywords. You can sort them by title, popularity, size, etc and, when you have found the video(s) you want, click on the download button and it will save them for you. They can then be kept in their native FLV format, or converted to one of 11 other video formats. Cool. You can also use Free YouTube Utility to download a number of videos at the same time, or drag 'n drop from the YouTube Website into the drop box (the author calls it a "suspension box"). We were most impressed with Free YouTube Utility. It is one of the easiest, and best, YouTube downloaders we have seen. One thing that really makes it worth grabbing is the search function so you don't even have to go to the YouTube Website to get your video clips. The number of supported video formats is great, as is the ability to be able to convert a downloaded YouTube video to an audio file. We found it hard to be critical of Free YouTube Utility. It does everything so well, and so easily, that virtually anyone could use it. The only thing that wasn't clear was how to use the drop box, but the Helpfile showed us what to do there. We also thought the built-in thumbnail previewer a little small. If you enjoy YouTube video clips, you need Free YouTube Utility. We loved! Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Access this 5.03MB download from: WinXP Multimedia Programs
Ainvo Registry Defrag v3.1.4.892 WinXP/Vista/7
Ainvo Registry Defrag is a tool that speeds up Windows by defragmenting (defragging) the Registry. It features a dynamic defragmentation map (to evaluate the condition of the Registry), an easy-to-use Wizard-style interface, it is suitable for novice PC users, and more. This is an easy way to ensure that your Windows Registry is running at peak efficiency by being defragmented. While it does not clean dead or unused Registry entries, it does ensure that the Registry is running as efficiently as it can be with the existing entries. Best used with a good Registry cleaner, Ainvo Registry Defrag will help ensure that your computer is running at peak levels. We would have liked to have seen a Registry cleaner incorporated into the program so that it was a one-click Registry makeover, rather than having to use multiple programs. We consider that Ainvo Registry Defrag is a "must have" tool to assist with your computer housekeeping. Grab a copy now! Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Access this 3.24MB download from: WinXP Windows Enhancements
MP3 Rocket v5.3.5 WinXP/Vista/7
MP3 Rocket is a peer-to-peer (P2P) file downloader offering millions of MP3 songs, movies, games, TV shows, etc. It features streaming radio & TV, BitTorrents, favorites, title search, "most popular" listings, a tabbed interface, it minimizes to tray, and more. This is a great tool for getting access to many millions of multimedia files (mainly music) and games. You can also use it to access streaming audio and video from on-line radio and TV stations. The search function allows you to search by title, artist, genre, etc and the whole package is professionally presented with a solid look 'n feel. As a way of accessing P2P music, etc, MP3 Rocket is superb. However, the legality of some P2P downloadable content is questionable and we urge caution before simply assuming that you have a legal right to the files on offer. We were most impressed with MP3 Rocket. It worked well and gave us access to a huge Internet-based content (the author claims over 12 million MP3 tracks!). Even if you don't want to become involved in file sharing, the streaming radio and television functions are great and, without question, they are legally free. If you want to increase your music library, MP3 Rocket is certainly one way to do that. We liked. Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Crazy Christmas Day WinXP/Vista/7
Crazy Christmas Day is a fun, Christmas-themed game where you must find hidden objects. It features multiple levels of play, 3 levels of graphic quality, Christmas-themed background music (can be turned off), increasingly challenging time-based gameplay, and more. This is more fun to play than you might think. Many of the levels are similar, but not the same, as you hunt for hidden objects on the screen, or re-arrange blocks of a picture to reveal the entire image. The storylines are thin, but the game itself is fun to play and is suitable for children of all ages. We enjoyed Crazy Christmas Day. It is a little crazy, and you might not want to play it at other times of the year, but if you are looking a simple but challenging game to play on Christmas day you need look no further. Try it for yourself! Note: we have been advised that this program is not suitable for Windows 95, 98 or ME. Get this 2.44MB download from: WinXP General Games
