Dial-Up Networking Monitor W95
Desktray iconized utility which presents the information (in either bits or bytes) of the traffic between your modem and ISP. This information is presented in either a graphical or statistical view. Good for visually seeing what is happening as data is being transferred through your modem. You can access this 146kB download from: W95 Internet Related
Midi Jukebox W95
If you're just after a program to play a list of MID or RMI files in the background while you're doing other things on your PC then Midi Jukebox is an answer to prayer. Small in size (the download is only 69kB) Midi Jukebox will list all the midi files in a directory and all you have to do is to click on each file you want played to have it added to the playlist. Once you have loaded up your playlist (or have imported a playlist in text format) you need only click the standard 'Play' button and the program will cycle through your selection endlessly (or until Hell freezes over, whichever comes first). If you only have a couple of midi files in the list you'll soon get sick of hearing them but there are extensive midi libraries available via the Internet so you could soon create for yourself a handsome array of terrific music to sooth the savage beast while you waited for a 2MB program to get downloaded via GeoCities! This player is super simple to use and it resides as a desktray icon while active so it doesn't take up valuable space. The only hassle we found was that the Helpfile was named MidiJukeBox.hlp and the program was looking for a Helpfile with the name of MidiJuke.hlp. A quick (and should be unnecessary!) name change and all was well. Try Midi Jukebox, you won't be disappointed. Grab your copy from: W95 Multimedia Programs
Pegs W95/W31
Pegs is a Checkers-like boardgame with 14 pegs in a triangular 15-hole board. The idea is to jump one peg over another (where you can) and delete the jumped peg until you are left with only one peg. This simple game is very addictive and can be played with one or two players. The interface is clean and easy to read, the pegs are well done and there are good sound effects. The 55kB download includes both 16 and 32-bit versions. Peg your claim to this fun boardgame at: W95 General Games
Desktop Changer W95
If you like to change your desktop wallpaper, screensavers, logos and sounds often then Desktop Changer is for you. Any bitmap with the extension BMP or SYS can be used for both logos and wallpaper and you can view your pictures with the built-in viewer, and even preview the sounds. The program allows you to set global instructions for items it controls, it allows the use of JPG images for wallpaper (Windows default is BMP) and uses sophisticated file validation (are logos the correct size, etc). We were impressed with the simple and straight forward interface which, while not fancy, was so easy to use we didn't even need to check with the Helpfile. Lorenz Graf's HTMLpics W95
This simple utility generates a HTML document of the web images in a directory. Super simple to use, you just set which directory you want the images listed from (with optional directory recursing), decide on the HTML file's name and location, and decide which of the images you want included. You can choose from GIF, JPG, XBM, PNG and BMP any or all and then decide if you just want the HTML file generated or if you want it generated and then viewed with the default browser. There are also options for background color so you can see the effect of transparent colors in a GIF, and for a fixed image size. We were quite impressed with Lorenz Graf's HTMLpics and found that it was every bit as good as claimed. Access this 141kB download from: W95 Internet Related
Kindred Konnections W31 (suitable W95)
Kindred Konnections is a sensational genealogy program which is fully GEDCOM compatible (import & export) and which can handle over 8 million records. Other features include: up to 60 characters for a surname; a total of 160 characters per place name; small filesizes; printing capabilities, including birthday calendars; etc. Truly a powerful and free!!! genealogy program which will suit everyone from the semi-casual user right through to the ardent and professional genealogist. Don't let the fact that it's 'only' 16-bit fool you, this is no toy or out-dated program. Even "Tim The Toolman" wouldn't want to supercharge this little baby! xBill W95
xBill is one of the funniest arcade-style games we have yet seen. The scenario is this. You are a system administrator with a network of computers and a hacker called 'Bill' (geeky looking dude with specs) is trying to infest your system with a virus disguised as an operating system called 'Wingdows' [TM]. This hacker is able to replicate himself many times (this is the stuff of nightmares!) as he tries to infect your system. You have to click on each of the 'clones' to splatter them (neat graphics and sound effects very satisfying!) before they can steal your existing operating systems and replace them with this horrible 'Wingdows' [TM] virus which looks like an operating system. If they do steal the OS from a computer, and you can splatter the hacker-clone before he escapes with it, you can drag it back. Once you are down to just one virus-free computer you have lost... We guarantee you will get hours of fun splattering this evil hacker, even if the operating systems you are saving are called Apple, and OS/2, and SunOS, and Linux, and... well, you get the picture. Not only highly addictive but comes with a great bonus the download is only 86kB. Start splattering this vile geek at: W95 General Games
PPP-Boost W95
If you haven't already amended your MaxMTU, RWIN and TTL Windows' Registery settings to improve your Internet connection, then this is one of the easiest ways of doing it. PPP-Boost amends three Registry settings with either your own settings or the recommended 576 for MaxMTU, 2144 for RWIN (if using a 28.8kB modem) and 64 for TTL. If these figures don't mean anything to you or even the settings themselves then don't worry and just accept these defaults. Windows 95 was never really designed to be used on the Internet the networking settings were optimized for a LAN so don't work as efficiently as they might on the Net. Tweak the settings with a program like PPP-Boost and you don't have to worry again (unless you reload Windows). We consider amending these settings essential and there is no less painful way of doing it than with PPP-Boost. It even gives you the option of saving your existing registry settings before implementing these changes. Access this 366kB download from: W95 Internet Related
DoWinStartup W95
Windows is not the kindest OS when it comes to ordering programs which launch at startup. Programs are often hidden in the Registery and you aren't even aware that they have loaded until you check with the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" dialog box. DoWinStartup allows you not just to determine exactly which programs are launched (including those hidden registry ones) but to change the order in which they load and also to add a delay factor before a program loads. This is just handing back control to the user where it should have resided all the time. DoWinStartup is an easy program to use the interface is so obvious that you don't need any additional help apart from on-screen info. However, there is a HTML info file for the cautious. Presented in two parts, the first is a configuration program where you can set the programs you want launched, the second is the actual program which loads your choices and which is run at startup. Easy! Access this 590kB download from: W95 Windows ExtrasUPDATES PrintKey to print/save either part or all of the active window and manipulate images has been upgraded to version 3.04. This great utility can also load GIF, JPG, BMP, WMF, EMF and ICO images, and can save in GIF, JPG and BMP formats. Images can also be manipulated in quite a few basic ways (color level, contrast, brightness, mirror, add frame, etc). Download size has been slightly increased to 250kB. One of the handiest utilities we have used, you can access it from: W95 Desktop Utilities Web-O-Rama an excellent HTML source-code editor has been upgraded to version 5.03. The author says that the new version "improves all aspects of the program". With a very slight increase in download size to 2.64MB, access Web-O-Rama from: W95 Internet Related COMMENTS We would like to thank the regular visitors to the CFS site who have told us their favorite freeware.
