The Completely Free E-mail Update #8
Issued Aug 26, 1997
Welcome to the eighth edition of the 'Completely Free Software E-mail Update'. Over the past week we've added a great many new programs, including the ones listed below.
The programs listed are completely free for non-commercial use, even though they may be shareware or commercial products. None are time-limited and all are fully functionable. If you know any that aren't exactly as specified, please let us know and they will be removed immediately.
We are interested in hearing about your favorite freeware and freebie websites so we can share them with others. The Internet is (or should be) about sharing -- us to you, you to us, all of us to each other. If you find any of the links broken or changed, please let us know immediately so we can amend the CFS website.
FREE WIN95 PROGRAMS
Klik Kit Gold
This is one sensational multimedia program! It will play or display a vast array of filetypes - audio, visual and graphical - in a huge variety of commonly used filetypes. Click on a filename (it even has a link to start Explorer in the 'Tools' menu) and it will play or display that file for you. This includes text and html files, as well as JPG, GIF (though not with animation), BMP and WMF images. It also allows you to play Quicktime, MPEG, AVI, FLI and FLC movies, and MID, AU, WAV and RMI sound clips. We set up Klik Kit Gold (what a name!) as our default player for those filetypes (except text) because, from Explorer, we are unlikely to want to edit these type of files. Not a small download at 3MB, never-the-less Klik Kit Gold is a 'must have' program. Access it from:

ToolBar for Windows 95/NT
Make life easier for yourself with this configurable button bar launcher for Win95 (there is also a Win 3.1 version too). You can organize yourself with up to ten separate ToolBars on the desktop. A left click launches a program, a right click adds another button. You can also drag 'n drop an icon on to the ToolBar to create a new button. Oh, so easy! Grab this 162kB download by going to:

Spyglass HTML Validator
Can't seem to get your web pages to work? You could do with a hand and that is what this program is aimed to do. It checks your HTML coding and reports on errors, lots of errors. Even when you page seems to work fine it still tells you there are lots and lots of errors! Like most other validators, you must look carefully at the results because amongst all those "you got it wrong" messages, some are actually true! At least this validator allows you to choose the coding benchmark (which program you have aimed your page at) and it also highlights your coding 'problems' in red. Used cautiously, this could be a valuable tool, but don't start having nightmares because your page does not live up to its standards - which seem to change from line to line! This masochist's delight is a 1.24MB download which can be accessed from:

Find Dead Files
Unused files just clog up your hard disk. Some must be kept as is, some can be zipped up to make them smaller for later use, others can be deleted. FDF is a small (222kB download) program which will hunt down files which haven't been accessed since a certain (pre-determined) date. We always say: if you haven't used it for 12 months then you don't need it. Of course, files kept for taxation purposes is a different thing. Access FDF from:
W95 Desktop Utilities
Warp 2
Inspired by the 'LightCycle' in the early 1980's movie, 'Tron', this simple (yet challenging) game will probably only be enjoyed by fans of that movie. The direction can be changed in 45 degree increments and there aren't any obstacles (it moves too fast), you might even find this game a little addictive. We didn't, then we're strange anyway! Screen Loupe for Windows 95/NT
This is one of those utilities which you often can't see a use for until you use it -- and then you wonder how you ever lived without it! Acting like a jeweller's loupe or magnifying glass, it magnifies the section of the screen under the cursor, making small detail easier to see and allowing you to copy that part of the screen -- text or graphics -- into the Windows' clipboard. By re-sizing the screen, you can use it as a fantastic (and easy to use) screen capture tool. It will also tell you the RGB of the color the mouse is hovering over (handy for identifying exact colors). It comes in Win95/NT and Win 3.1 versions (see below), and the W95 version can be configured to add an icon to the desktray. This sensational 612kB download can be accessed from:
W95 Desktop Utilities
YA-zee
This is a fancy version of the old yatzee dice game which utilises modern ray-traced graphics to enhance the screen while you play. Needing an 800x600 screen and 16-bit colors, YA-zee can be played by one, two or three players with a high-score table to prove who's king of the heap. Terrific graphics, terrific sound (you can almost feel the dice rolling!) and a not-to-large download (why can't Microsoft learn how to be frugal with program sizes?). Brit Trivia & Unauthorized X-Files Trivia

Likewise the Unauthorized X-Files Trivia game will give all you X-File buffs a chance to match your wits with the computer or a friend, with categories for each season and a general category. Both trivia games feature these music from the shows which, of course, requires a sound card to hear. GDSpell
Need to spell check your 'text' or 'ascii' files? GDSpell is a DOS-based spell checker which will do just that. Holding 20,000 common words in memory and having another 85,000 on disk, GDSpell will quickly whip through your files and straighten out your spellin'. There's even an auxiliary dictionary so you can add those not-so-common words. While the thought of doing our spell checking in DOS with the attendant switches and general syntax might sound daunting, you could soon whip up a batch file so you could check your spelling with ease. Can't whip up a batch file? Don't call us, use a word processor with a built-in spell checker! Access this 412kB download from:

ToolBar for Windows
This is another ToolBar (see above in the W95 section), but this one can be used for both Windows 3.1 and W95. Use this buttonbar program launcher with up to seven different button bars - even use it as the default Win 3.1 'shell' instead of Program Manager. A tiny 82kB download, you can access this great little utility from:
W3.1 & DOS

(See also in the W95 section.) This is one of those utilities which you often can't see a use for until you use it -- and then you wonder how you ever lived without it! Acting like a jeweller's loupe or magnifying glass, it magnifies the section of the screen under the cursor, making small detail easier to see and allowing you to copy that part of the screen -- text or graphics -- into the Windows' clipboard.
