1st QuickRes Light
Review date: August 25, 1999
Version reviewed: 1.5b1(see Update below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

1st QuickRes Light is what Microsoft's PowerToy, QuickRes, should have been.

Like QuickRes, 1st QuickRes Light will change screen resolutions on-the-fly (without having to re-boot the computer) but unlike QuickRes, this enhanced version includes fast access to the Display applet and also has a screensaver control section (launch the default or a random screensaver, select another screensaver as the default one, configure any screensaver, etc). You can quickly switch to the next higher resolution, to the next lower resolution or to a 640 x 480 screen.

One neat feature was a small window which appears when you change the resolution. It holds the new resolution for 15 seconds (automatically switches back) or until you decide whether you want to set the new resolution only until the computer is re-booted, or, of course, to retain the new size permanently.

While this is a beta version, 1st QuickRes Light has proven to be quite stable on our test computer.

Why would you bother to use Microsoft's weak effort after having used 1st QuickRes Light?

This is definitely a "must have"!

Update: December 15, 1999

1st QuickRes Light has been updated to version 1.6b.

We have no details of what has been updated.
