Key Folder
Review date:November 7, 2003
Version reviewed:1.1 (see Updates below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

Key Folder is a password manager that helps organize & store passwords, plus other sensitive information, using secure 128-bit Blowfish encryption.

It features a single username & password access, an Explorer-style interface, a password generator, supports multiple users, password expiration, drag 'n drop, it minimizes to the desktray (next to the clock), and more.

As the author points out, Key Folder is suitable for storing information about Website accounts, e-mail accounts, PIN codes, bank account information, credit card numbers, software license/registration codes, and more.

Using a familiar tree structure, you can group similar information in folders (say, all of your Web information) and then squirrel down through sub folders until you arrive at the information you require, clicking on a button to copy the password, etc into the Windows Clipboard.

Because the program itself is secure, you can feel confident that only people who know your username password will be able to access that data.

We were highly impressed with Key Folder. It was easy to use, presented the information you want to store in a convenient form, and was secure.

Get it!

Note: this program is not suitable for Windows 95.

Update:November 19, 2003

Key Folder has been updated to version 1.2.

The author advises in this version includes the the following new features: import & export of items & folders using XML, CSV (comma or semicolon separated) & text file (tab separated); automatic/manual backup & restore of user files; toolbar with easy access to the most commonly performed tasks; option to hide toolbar & status bar; item count in status bar; new option for minimize on close; and function to collapse all in tree view right click menu.

An impressive array of new features!

Update:January 6, 2004

Key Folder has been updated to version 1.21.

The author advises that this is a small maintenance release, with added context sensitive help and backup to a temporary location (eg a removable disk like a USB drive).

Update:February 24, 2004

Key Folder has been updated to version 1.22.

The author advises that changes in this version include: possibility to sort items & folders; menu item & keyboard shortcut for "Collapse All" and "Sort All"; and if an item/user name/password is selected in the tree view and the enter key is pressed the edit item windows is opened.
