Quick ShutDown
Review date:July 5, 2001
Version reviewed:2.0 (see Update below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

Quick ShutDown is a tool which can easily shutdown, reboot or logoff a Windows session when you click on its desktray icon (next to the clock).

It features support for hotkeys, and can optionally force reluctant windows to close.

This is a great utility and is extremely handy. The facility to force problem screens to close is terrific because this is one of the biggest problems with using programs of this type. A screen won't close and the entire PC locks up. Nasty.

Quick ShutDown uses only 2% system resources so it is worthwhile installing a shortcut to it in the Startup folder so that it will load automatically with Windows. Our only criticism of this program is that it doesn't offer an easy way to do this.

To use the program, all you need do is either press the hotkey combo (if you have set one – we used Ctl-Alt-S for shutdown & Ctrl-Alt-R for restart), click on the desktray icon to perform the preset function, or select from the right-click context menu the function you require. Simple!

We find that we have to restart Windows two or three times each day to retrieve lost system resources, etc, and a program like this is a real help to us.

Quick ShutDown is well worth having and we suggest that you grab a copy.

Update:February 19, 2003

Quick ShutDown has been updated to version 2.6.

The author advises that hibernate, standby, lock & media eject have been added to this version.
