Catechumen is an awesome demo of a Christian-inspired corridor game where you have to save the captured Christians and defeat the evil spirits and demons.
It features truly excellent graphics and animation, terrific background music, only mild violence, is not very easy to win, and is buckets of fun to play.
The story is set in Nero's Rome when Christian persecution was at its height. The author says: "Your mentor and brethren have been captured by the demon possessed Roman soldiers. It is your job to work you way through the catacombs to free them. Satan has a powerful hand in the Roman Empire and has powerful foes to block your every effort. From the prison, in which your mentor is kept, he sends a plea for help to you."
Catechumen (means "novice Christian") is not just for Christians. While the Christian aspect of the game is quite strong, even non-Christians will find much in this game to enjoy as they delve into the catacombs beneath ancient Rome.
The game requires more subtly than most Quake-style corridor games and quite often blasting away at Roman soldiers is not the best solution.
A lack of detailed help is a major drawback and you have to experiment to find out what controls work. Luckily there's a "save game" feature.
Don't expect to finish the demo in 5 minutes it has a level of gameplay not normally found in demos.
If you can handle the large filesize then grab a copy of Catechumen. Could be the best game you've played this year!
