32VerSee
Review date:November 29, 2001
Version reviewed:2.31
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

32VerSee is a graphics viewer offering image conversion (supports BMP & JPG), slideshow, image capture, and supports BMP, JPG, GIF (not animated), ICO, CUR, RLE, WMF & EMF formats.

It features instant zoom & stretch, optional autoscroll on slideshow, set image as wallpaper, image flip, and more.

This is a potentially good image viewer, though it has some rough edges. The Helpfile would not work from within the program though it does work if you directly access the English or Spanish version from the program's folder.

Toolbar icons are not standard so you have to learn their function (luckily there is fly-over balloon help) and there are some small "unsupported features" like the Cancel button not working in the Option menu. The lack of animated GIF support is regrettable, though not uncommon in this type of viewer.

Having said that, 32VerSee is quite an acceptable image viewer. It supports a reasonable range of image types, though the lack of TIF support was surprising.

The author describes the program as a "photo editor" but the only editing you can do is to convert the image to either BMP or JPG, and flip the image horizontally and/or vertically. We don't think that this constitutes calling it a "photo editor"!

The slideshow function is excellent and you can manually flick through the images in a folder or use the autoscroll function. Regrettably it will return to its own folder by default unless you use one of the command-line switches to nominate another default folder.

The "screen capture" function does not capture the active window, or the entire screen, but just the image you are displaying. Captured images are not automatically saved but are simply copied to the Windows Clipboard – the same as if you used Ctrl-C.

Overall, 32VerSee has a lot of potential to become a good image viewer but needs more development before it reaches any sort of maturity.
