StudioLine Photo Basic
Review date:April 17, 2003
Version reviewed:1.1.6.0 (see Updates below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

StudioLine Photo Basic is a professional photo-editing, management, & image sharing tool.

It features: importation of most popular image file formats (but not GIF); share picture thumbnails via e-mail; print images in preset standard sizes; create Web galleries; slideshow; and more.

This is a "Lite" version of the shareware product but it cannot import GIF images and it cannot export to either GIF or TIF formats. However, it encompasses some of the most powerful photo-editing tools available, and incorporates a large range of filters and effects.

StudioLine Photo Basic can also create Web pages of images using a supplied template. It can categorize and store your images and do all sorts of other nifty tricks with them, not including displaying them as a slideshow.

The interface for StudioLine Photo Basic is not exactly in standard Windows format but it is quite easy to use and there is a minimum learning curve.

We were disappointed that it doesn't prompt to save changes when it closes and you must "export" an image to ensure that your changes are saved (see Author's Note below).

The editing tools are powerful and we feel that most users will find that function most important. The lack of support for GIF images in this free version lessens its value somewhat but there are plenty of free tools which will convert BMP or JPG images into GIF. Even the humble MS Paint does this.

Powerful, easy to use, stylish – StudioLine Photo Basic is all of those things, and more.

Note: not suitable for Windows 95.

Author's Note: ...changes are [not] "lost". They are automatically stored in StudioLine's image archive ...one can make changes today and print, email or publish the changed images tomorrow or a week from now. No "prompting" is necessary ...changes are saved – but the user's original files are preserved.
