BG_ASCII
Review date:August 10, 2000
Version reviewed:0.9 (see Updates below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

BG_ASCII is an interactive ASCII graphic tool which can convert a JPG image into an ASCII image and can also create ASCII text.

The image section features image resize, plus black and white level adjustment. The ASCII text section features adjustment of font size/foreground, and also background characters.

While this tool is very easy to use, do not expect a masterpiece when converting a JPG to ASCII text because there are many factors which must be allowed for. We found that the final image was very large and tended to be distorted a little.

The ASCII text feature is probably more usable though not as spectacular – type in some text and see it instantly converted into ASCII text. Cool.

No prizes for being pretty, never-the-less BG_ASCII is a fun toy to have around for that occasion when you want something a little different.

Update: November 7, 2000

BG_ASCII has been updated to version 1.1.

The author has advised of the following version changes: enhanced ASCII text mode; black and white picture mode; supports all major image file formats; and conversion not only whole image but a selected region of it (as in scanner programs).

Update: March 12, 2001

BG_ASCII has been updated to version 1.3.

The author advises that changes in this version include: color HTML (you can create color ASCII art pictures); ASCII art text function (you can invert, flip, rotate, crop text); save function (you can save your work as plain text, bitmap image or color HTML page); and desktop hotkey (using hotkey you can create artistic ASCII art text within any Windows application – this is very useful to add commentary in program code).
