Xenu's Link Sleuth is a fabulous link checker/site spider for websites.
It can quickly check the links of either a single page or a full website and can squirrel down to 999 levels. It checks multiple links virtually simultaneously and can be checking up to 100 links at any one time. This multiple link threading can be adjusted between 1 and 100 with the default being a conservative 30. The author says that he finds 70 is best for him.
Bad links can be re-checked at any time and the full results of a link check can be saved (you can even save a partially checked page and re-start where you left off the next time to go on-line).
Results are displayed full screen with successful links shown in green and unsuccessful links (with the reason for the bad link) shown in red. You can just view the red 'bad' links if you like and they can be re-checked at any time. Clicking on any link loads it into your web browser for viewing.
After all the links have been checked you can have the results displayed in an HTML page with quite a lot of other information included.
This program does much more than we can mention in this small review so, if you have a website, get it!!!
Xenu's Link Sleuth has been upgraded to version 1.0u.
It now includes a 'skip these' feature to excludes URLs.
Xenu's Link Sleuth has been updated to version 1.0v.
The author advises that new features/changes include: EMBED tag now checked; "Options" in the "New" dialog; "Return to top" in Report; now converting more &blah; characters; converting &blah; characters before normalizing; convert characters in URL; can now handle URLs like http://user:password@host/ or ftp or https; export always exports *all*, regardless of the view; and links that start with "/../" are considered to be broken.
We are much impressed with Link Sleuth and use it to regularly check the thousands of links on the CFS site.
