LapLink FTP
Review date: September 2, 1999
Version reviewed: 1.0.22 (see Update below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

LapLink FTP is a file transfer manager with some terrific features.

Using a double Explorer-style view (one on top of the other) you can quickly connect to your favorite FTP site (in the top pane) and drag 'n drop files between that and the bottom pane which is your computer. Of course, you can't drag files from your computer to a remote computer (FTP site) without permission.

Using Wizards to help create specific sites (including the site of your homepage if you have one), these are integrated into the top pane Explorer-style view and clicking on any of these sites will automatically connect you up for file transfer.

One unique aspect of LapLink FTP is its integration with its own website which features a good collection of FTP sites covering a wide range of interests (games, etc). Click on one of those sites and it will load up your copy of LapLinkFTP for the actual file transfer. Neat.

Unfortunately, this program lacks some of the sophistication of other FTP file managers – for example there is no file queuing or scheduling (see Update below. Ed) – but the simplicity of use makes it particularly valuable for new users and/or for people with limited computer literacy.

The interface is quite easy to use and the Helpfile is, for a change, quite helpful.

The whole package is very professionally presented.

LapLink FTP is advertiser supported but the ads are not overly intrusive.

Update: January 17, 2000

LapLink FTP has been updated to version 2.0.13.

This new version has taken the sophistication of the program to a whole new level (something we were critical of when we first reviewed the program in September 1999).

It now features Transfer Queue (collect files from desired directories and queue them for later transfer), Scheduling (schedule transfers to happen automatically at any time of the day), Proxy/Firewall Support (access a proxy server from outside the firewall), and Default Folder Settings (specify the default local/Internet folders to which selected files will be downloaded/uploaded). You can also purchase a non-advertiser version.

We were impressed with LapLink FTP before, we are impressed even more so now!
