Universal Explorer (free version)
Review date:June 15, 2001
Version reviewed:2.1 (see Update below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

Universal Explorer is a powerful Windows Explorer replacement, but with the same look 'n feel.

Features include an archive manager (supports BH, CAB, QZ, JAR, LHA, LZH, TAR, ZIP, & ZOO filetypes, and SFX) plus you can view and edit almost any file without opening the original program.

The author says that tools included with this program are: find files, search text, replace text, split file, disk copy, directory size, directory print, directory compare, set properties, batch rename, slide show, thumbview, screen ruler, screen capture, calendar, calculator, ASCII list, system information and hex window. Wow!

This is an amazing program. Not only does it offer an excellent file manager, but the tools included mean that many separate utilities won't been needed.

All of your existing Explorer context menu (right click) menu items are still there and the transition from Explorer to Universal Explorer is totally painless. The hardest part is learning all of the new commands you have available!

This program is advertiser supported which means that it makes occasional use of your Internet connection to fetch ads.

Try Universal Explorer for yourself and see if it isn't a better file manager than Explorer will ever be.

We were extremely impressed, we think that you will be too.

Update: August 8, 2001

Universal Explorer has been updated to version 2.2.

The author advises that additions in this version include: "Encrypt/Decrypt" tool; "Color List" tool; "Copy/Move to" function under Edit menu to copy or move selected object(s) to another destination; auto-check file contents feature for non-filtered (Options -- Filters) files; and "Show - Folder" option to toggle the folder view ON and OFF within file list area.

This version also has some bug fixes.
