Xteq X-Setup
Review date: March 31, 1999
Version reviewed: 4.0 (see Updates below)
NOTE: the review only pertains to the version/date mentioned above. Subsequent versions could be quite different from the reviewed version.
Review:

This is an excellent Windows' Registry hacking program which uses a series of replaceable plug-ins to carry out the Registry tweaks.

It is supplied with 121 plug-ins which allows over 250 Registry tweaks. It also comes with 17 Wizards which offers over 130 tweaks. The Wizard tweaks are not additional to the main plug-ins but just an easier way of accessing some of the tweaks. Many of the tweaks are quite obscure and we were impressed with the range of Registry adjustment offered.

The program needs IE4 or better to be (or have been) installed.

You can also download a separate little program, X-Setup SDK, from the Xteq website which helps you to create your own plug-ins. Neato!

The user interface is 'average' and we would hope that the author concentrates some more effort into this area for future versions. This mightn't worry genuine power users who eat nails for breakfast but the average user sometimes requires just a little bit more hand holding.

Anyone for a pound of nails?

Update: April 17, 2000

Xteq X-Setup has been updated to version 5.6.

Here are some of the new items in this version:

  1. HTML Help
  2. support for IE 5.01 and 5.5, increased support for Windows 2000, and Windows Millennium support added
  3. MSDOS.SYS options now work properly on Windows 98 Second Edition
  4. new security features (allows hiding or disabling of several important Windows settings, with undo options for each as well, to protect your setup)
  5. supports plug-in and wizard caching, which increase performance greatly
  6. the tools menu now auto-customizes itself to your operating system (only those utilities which come with your OS are shown, reducing clutter and improving usability)
  7. supports well over 799 settings and options with a simple to use "Search" feature to easily locate whichever options are needed to find or change
  8. users can now change font, font size, color and more, useful for people with visual impairments or who are using high resolutions
  9. Tip of the Day now has a "Previous" button.

Update: August 25, 2000

Xteq X-Setup has been updated to version 5.7.

The author advises of "just a few of the latest features: Office 97 and Office 2000 tweaks, IE 1.x through 5.x tweaks, video card tweaks for popular boards such the Riva TNT/TNT2/128/GeForce 256 series, Voodoo Banshee series, ATI Rage series and more, excellent security options/tweaks, major performance boost tweaks, extensive customization abilities, and much more. There are hundreds of tweaks for the Win9x/Millennium/NT/2000 operating systems. Highly recommended for power users, gamers, system admins, and anyone looking to maximize their performance and speed."

This is a most amazing Registry "hacking" tool and an absolute "must have" for all serious Windows users.
